Backlinks is still the core of Google ranking algorithms.

However, to rank your site is harder nowadays. You could not solely rely on backlinks. You should consider another hundred thousands factors also to rank a site for any keyword.

    Hope this helps.

I think Google is still short of 100,000 factors. At least I hope

High quality backlinks will always remain as one of the most important factors. Though in saying that, on-page factors and social signals also play massive roles in contributing to high page rankings.

Never focus on just one strategy.

Yes, backlinks are still the most important factor next to content in ranking, but only one-way (not reciprocal) links. And the higher ranking of those incoming links the better. I can give you 50 free one-way backlinks just for asking. Just check out Linkwithptaylor98: Home.
Also, use good meta tags, still important although some experts claim they aren't.

If that is the case why there are some sites/pages that get rank in google search result that don't even have a backlink

What are you checking the backlinks with?

I notice that a lot of the free tools online suck (especially backlinkwatch). Make sure you're using a good tool to check.

Opensiteexplorer.org is good but it has only three free searches a day.

I am sure that there is no link, here is the case sometimes if I have a new powerpoint presentation and share it at slideshare in few minutes the slide I shared at slideshare is showing in google search result, or even a youtube video I shared I never put back link on them both. Or a warrior post

Maybe there is no link to your slideshare post or youtube video page however you are posting to very authoritative websites this is the reason why your post ranks even without backlink because of the reason mentioned.

Backlinks are still the biggest ranking factor but Google is coming down hard on links they view as non-natural. If you are getting slammed with a penalty then these are some of he links that has probably gotten you in trouble.

The answer is obviuosly Yes, there is no other way round to rank website without enough backlink generated with white hat method, but the only thing there is that you will need to give more of you time if it happened that you want to go for it and try as much as possible to be ethical and build your backlink naturally.

I don't really see the relevance of backlinks these days.

Back in the days when backlinks were when webmasters added links to other relevant sites it makes sense to attribute that to a sites authority.

What does it say about a site that its owner has found a bunch of high PR sites and commented/posted on them? Absolutely nothing. I'm sure Google realises this.

Backlinks will always be useful. Without them, SEO won't exist. They help us get some PR and also authority to our website and ranking to the keywords.

backlinks mean a lot. But i put quality over quantity. I rank over competitors who have thousands more than me. A good site and quality links are all you need

I think Social Media has really changed the face of SEO in recent years. It's not just about backlinks anymore. I think more social media attention, higher up in rankings.

But of course those that are shared or twitted more generally do get more backlinks, so in all it's hard to say.
