Possible to recover backlinks from dropped domain?

Hey guys,

Quick question here... I bought my first domain about 5 years ago, ran a website for 4 years, then decided not to renew (as some stuff had come up in my life where I just didn't have time to work on it). I spent forever getting backlinks... yahoo answers, article submissions, forum posting, you name it.

Now when I decided not to renew the domain, I originally didn't know all my backlinks would be reset. Now, just a year later, I've decided I want to pick up my old domain and as predicted, I'm back at zero backlinks.

Question: is it possible to recover these backlinks from my formerly dropped domain?

Just because a domain goes expired doesn't mean that the backlinks disappear. They will disappear when they have been removed by the source content. Either the page linking to has vanished, or your link on it has vanished.

It's certainly possible that whoever was managing a site with a link to yours removed the link because they were getting a 404 error. But realistically, most people just aren't going to take the time to remove an old link (unless they were getting paid for it).

So I wouldn't be surprised if those links were still out there but your site just simply hasn't been re-associated with them in terms of the various backlink tools - especially the types of links you are referring to which while a little helpful are mainly spammy links that don't get indexed frequently.

So they are probably still there but they'll take a little time to "re-appear".

They might be some backlinks linking to internal pages of your site. If you you're using a WP blog, one of the viable ways to salvage these links are by installing a free plugin: 404 Redirection

Search it up within your WP dashboard -> Add New Plugin

I haven't actually re-purchased the domain, it's just sitting in my account waiting for the renewal. The thing about it is that most backlinks I made just went straight to the domain, like when I used the domain name as a source on yahoo answers, or had it in my signature on some forums.

So you guys think the reason I show having zero backlinks now is because they all point to nothing? And by reinstating the website, and perhaps installing this plugin, I can get them to link up again?

Use SEO Spyglass then you'll be able to really know what's going on with that domain.

I'd recommend you to start from zero, launch a brand new site.
Your site went down in Google's "mind", we don't even know what techniques you used back then. They might have been obsolete, possibly harmful techniques to acquire links (by today's standards).

So, I advise you to start a brand new website! Good luck!

shipwrecked - You make an excellent point. Some of the traffic tecniques I used those many years ago may not be appropriate anymore in Google's eyes. While I don't necessarily think they were bad, it may be in my best interest to just restart.

ticknocker - Thanks for the recommendation. I'll look into using that software sometime.

If you know the links you had are spam type of links then I guess it should be left and start new.

Although I'm not one of the experts here, I think Mike Friedman or Mike Anthony should be the ones to make a better call with solid advice in this area than me.

I'd say less than a quarter of them were, and there were thousands. I used to do Yahoo answers for hours and hours a day. Those are all legit. Plus I had a couple hundred posts on a few forums (in my niche for the site).

Then there might have been some shady stuff, like link swapping with less than spectacular websites, but those are the only things I can think of that may have been considered "spam".

I guess I'll hope that one of those Mike's drops by this thread

If you have backlinks to it, just re-reg it and 301 it to a new site (If its in the same niche).

I dont know if Google wipes the backlink value. I have never done this. All the domains i get from auctions etc never expire so havent been dropped and have the origional reg date :-/
