Are these domains fairly easy to beat with an exact match .org .com or .net

In a long run never opt for "Exact Match Domain-EMD" they will be wiped off anytime & are solely depended on Google or any search engines mood swing.

Talking about high quality sites like About, answers etc, if the pages from these sites are properly optimized then it becomes quite difficult to beat them.

    Hope this helps.

Google will never penalize EMD's, they will just stop taking into consideration keywords in URL.

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

No, dont bother exact match domains. Ever since penguin, emds become useless when it comes to seo. You can beat still these giants with other good offpage SEO efforts, but it will take a really long while..

What? All of my domains are EMD's, and they rank perfectly fine. Since when they are useless for SEO? Google merely stopped them contributing so much to ranking. They still contribute, just not as much.

      Stop spilling out useless crap.

Ok maybe useless is an overstatement my bad. Probably due to me seeing many other peoples' emd sites getting slapped.

I think these days after penguin, it's good to have your main keyword in the domain, but not EMD's. As the guy above said, I don't think google will penalize your site for being an EMD, but it's certainly not going to give you the advantage that it once did.
