SEO for home repair contractor site

Hi folks:
My past experience has only with automotive sites but I just redid the site for guy who had done my roofing when I lived in New York. The guy does amazing work at below market rate with such a positive attitude that 10 years later when he emailed me about helping him out with his site, I jumped at the chance. Here is the site: Home.

Now I'm thinking maybe I jumped a little too soon and may do him a disservice as I have no idea how to optimize sites like these and cause it to increase in SERPs. I would love to hear from anyone who might have done sites like these or may have some idea of the market.

Tip: include his physical business address with each link that you build. Google looks at the content to determine what the sites being linked to are about. It's a solid tactic to write a web 2.0 post for example, then include his address in the signature. Helps Google to determine who should see his site.

Also: the site is awful. What are those 5,000 bullet points about?

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

Thanks for the tip on including the physical address, will keep that in mind. I have buried the long list. What Web 2.0 asset would you suggest? I gather that an article on roofing would do the trick for such a post?

If you don't know how or where to build backlinks, or how to rank a site, you shouldn't have took on a client. It's harsh words, but he needs to see results too. You may need to spend 48-hours on Google searching.

Just doing it as a favor to him. He has been at it for 30 years and has enough business through word of mouth. I'm a retired CIO so yeah you are right SEO is not my primary expertise though my automotive sites are doing pretty well.

Need help on this site though as I have no clue on how to promote a site like this.

It's obviously a local search, so start with that. What's the radius (miles) he's willing to travel for work? That's his target traffic in the SERPs.

95% of his work is in Brooklyn so will try to promote in Brooklyn counties. Thanks for your generous advise.

I see the site is 1 day old (1/20/2013), at least you don't have to clean up another SEOs mess (maybe). I didn't check any backlinks to see If the domain is old. Looking at that domain name I can't imagine the domain wasn't registered in the past, possibly by someone else. Might want to check that out before going all in on the domain name, unless that's the real business name.

    Nothing in the SERPs:

He had his site developed by someone a few years back. A lot of money was charged to develop a basic site and he was also required to pay a monthly sum to run the site even though no changes were made. Last year when he wised up and turned off the faucet the site was brought down. Since the developer still owns the site we have to begin from scratch until the old site is available again. Hopefully new work can be done that will obviate the need for the old domain.
