Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

I've have seen sites bouncing around in the SERPS like I haven't seen in a long time. Many of my top competitors have been thrown back to page 3 & 4, and there are sites on page 1 now who I never remember seeing before.

Same here. Large sites, that have been around for ages and have grown to be industry leaders got thrown back to page 2 or 3 for most of their targeted keywords. Some of my keywords where affected as well but I am still waiting for things to settle down before I can say that I was really hit by the update.

From my experience I can say that things don't usually remain the way they are right after an algorithm update.

Yeh the weirdest thing is even though my site went down for a lot of keywords, many of my youtube videos seemed to have increased in ranking. I have youtube videos on page 1 right now for keywords that have never been on page 1 before. So I'm still not sure what to think.

according to my observations.. whenever Google drop down organic queries.. Google got around 20% from dropped queries in adwords...

just like you guys said industry leaders got hit that means they care about traffic and they might go for adwords for certain keywords to maintain their business...

    nice trick by Google :-)

F**k Google. Never ever give ads to Goolge. Instead use that money in Bing, Yahoo or any other paid advertisement. Once every one boycott's Google, then they will stop acting that they are God of Internet. But will the whole world agree to this...?. Will everyone be ready to boycoytt Google?. I don't think that is ever going to happen. Hence we will have to live with this F**king God till another one emerges.

Just keep adding quality content, then send out spun versions of each to 11.74 web 2.0s and blast each of those with 5000 quality wiki links and your car keys should come back.

PS - I haven't actually tried this because I ride a bike, but I have a friend who knows someone who sells a WSO and he said it works for him every time.

This space will be awarded to the first WSO owner who can prove they make Million$ from their methods.

Several of my clients got affected by this update. Many keywords that were on page 1 have gone way back to pages 6-10. Others have dropped from page 1 to page 3-5. Some keywords are not in top 20 pages. These are the sites with the original content and weekly updated blogs with the original content. Competition sites that should not be on the first page are there now. Very strange.

Ditto here, sites that have never seen the light of day on page one are now on page one of google, affiliate aggregator sites. My niche is insurance. Page 1 to page 8 in one day for a few important key words...anyone have an idea what google is not liking?

I have seen people saying that this is googles way of getting people to pay more for adwords. And I personally think thats ridiculous to assume.

    For 2 very logical reasons.

    1) If your site gets thrown off page 1, you are far more likely to NOT want to use adwords because you are bitter towards google.

    2) People who are ranking well, are making more money, and have more money to spend on PPC.

So I doubt google is trying to make more money through adwords. I just want to clear that up.

You might be right but just look last two years Google's PPC/adwords Financial reports....

Isn't there big increase in their PPC/adwords revenue as compare to 2009-2010.

But yes, As a SEO Professional every update has plus point as well. because we got more space to do business until SEO exists.... :-D

I have a site where I spend about 3k/month on unique articles, etc and have tons of bookmarkers/facebook shares/likes, etc. So the site is real, and quality.

It was ranking #2/3 .. 6 up and down throughout the past year. Now my keyword is a mess, all usual competitors except for one guy is gone from top 10.

Now the top 10 looks like a mess, with youtube's showing up, tube sites that have a few videos for the keyword, and random unrelated crap. My site is out of the top 100 for all my keywords.

The #1 site is NON-unique content, all scraped, he spent 30k on backlinks (I know we audited it and confirmed sources), he has ads above the fold, and he has EMD down to the T. So he's breaking every damn rule in google's "rule book". The only thing is he has a really strong backlink profile.

Lets just say I am very p1ssed because this site was my bread and butter and I lost 90% of my revenue overnight thanks to the god all mighty.

PS: I didn't do anything, just kept updating the site with more unique content that my readers like & enjoy & comment on, etc yet I got the google hate. What gives?

Well it was a Panda update so perhaps you should re-structure your site next time as Google appearently doesn't like what you're doing despite all of the unique content. Perhaps you have to many affiliate links per page or are you heavily cloaking things. You have to find it in that direction most probably.

I know some people with game sites that also rank awful and it's structurized in a bit odd way and there I can also think of that being the only reason why Google forces it not to rank well.

Thanks for the tip, I analyzed my competitors in top 10 now ranking and they all have way more OGL than I do. So I dunno wtf.

In fact there's a page now ranking #3 which is a single page site with about 60 of the same outgoing link to sponsor.

        :S

His backlink profile is weak, he has just 7 links.

Hmm okay, can be several reasons for that, one of them is using a poor back link checker, I would check again with Majestic or Ahrefs just in case, often it also makes a huge difference whether you type in the version with www. or without www but that doens't count for all back link checkers.

Another reason can be that it's a brand new page that is getting a temporarily benefit of the doubt with a high ranking and that could be gone next week.

And what's also possible is that it's a stone old site that has more authority then you think.

If none of the above is true, well guess there are always some exceptions that are hard to explain and without seeing the actual site it remains guessing anyway.
