The best way to do SEO in 2013?

I'm making a new site and it's going to be content rich with unique content about how to do various different things, nothing specific.

I want to do much of the SEO myself, and spend little on SEO and more on articles. What steps do you advise I take? I'm currently doing blog posts and vary anchor texts to begin with. Is this good and positive for SEO in 2013?

What else should I try and do?

I think that you are on the right track with unique content and anchor text variation. Just a few other things you may want to implement:
    1. Use LSI keywords in your articles
    2. Diversify your backlink sources
    3. (Very important) implement social media to yours sites
    4. Don't over optimize your site; create your site as if you were not trained in seo.

Here's an idea. Forget about seo. Throw it out the window.

It's not like the good old days when it was easy to game the system.

There are so many better ways of getting traffic. Social media, video
marketing, forum marketing, guest blogging. Those are just the free ones.

Google is winning this fight. They wanted to make SEO less relevant, and they've
largely succeeded. Why fight a battle that's already been lost?

      Agree with you,

I don't even feel good getting traffic from search engine anymore bcause I know that kinda traffic won't last long..

I think the best thing to do in 2013 is to harvest traffic from other site. Twitter, facebook, stumble upon, digg, forums, or any kind of website that already have a lot of visitor.

and make content such as info graphic, videos, list of things and how-to do things step-by-step, funny stuff, quote, weird news and story...people on the internet love these things they will put them on their fb wall for sure!

Concentrate on researching quality keywords and ad tons of content based on the selected keywords.

Make sure that your website has no HTML or CSS errors, do proper on page SEO.

Do not over optimise your website, try to collect email addresses of your visitors by giving them freebies. You can promote your websites through email marketing. You cannot completely rely on SEO.

Work on some social media campaigns and SEO together, always have a custom list of websites to build back links. Do not use the general list of websites that you may get with the link building tools.

Use quality content for your link building campaigns as well.

You're making an ehow type of site, I take it?

Well, before you start building links, just be VERY careful about Google Panda:
Google Panda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Making really similar articles that target super-long tails, like making one article called:

    "How to do SEO properly"
    and another
    "Ways to do proper SEO"

Is common for sites like that.

Not saying you're going down that road, but it's something to keep in mind as you add content.

After that, there are literally 101 building strategies you can use.

    Good luck.
