Is my competition too strong?

My competition on the first two pages is a bunch of news articles from leading Canadian news papers, and huffington post. They both have hundreds of shares on facebook etc. But the news articles change on page one of my main keyword every month or so. Do I have any chances to bit those PR7 websites?

more info: I do have exact match between my main keyword and my domain name. My website (blog) is 10 days old, and has 3000 views so far which is sheety. The keyword has 2000 exact searches per month and 2 cpm or whatever that thing is displayed on google keywords.

edit: oh and I currently go anywhere from page 3 to nowhere in first 100 pages

10 days old? That really is nothing in website terms. I would say though that 2000 exact matches isn't really much. I mean, even if all those 2000 people clicked through to your site (never going to happen), you still wouldn't have a great deal of traffic. What's your monetisation strategy? Are you selling? Or Adsensing?

adsensing would be the monetisation strategy, my second keyword has around 10000 searches. But this is more of the long term strategy, as I expect a huge boost in search queries for my keyword in the future. The issue is that all news would be all over my keyword as well, so I am wondering is it possible to out compete them?

Remember PR is not assigned to a website, it's assigned to a web page. Are the pages you are competing with high PR? Or is the home page of the domains they are high PR? Huge difference.

It's not uncommon for large authority sites to unintentionally rank for lots of keywords due to that authority. But that doesn't mean that you can't penetrate the top of the list through some focused efforts.

Without knowing more specifics it's hard to say if it's possible in this case. But just because I had a bunch of newspapers ranking for a keyword wouldn't alone cause me to retreat.

Newspapers ranking for terms would make me MORE inclined to target that keyword. The fact that there is no "specific website" attempting to rank for the term is perfect. Single pages & post are easy to beat.

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

Agreed, especially If they're something like Google News sites, the same News page won't be ranked in a day/week/month because it will usually get bumped by another Google News page from a different domain, where none of the News sites usually have much long term focus on the [exact] keyword.

A tip for news related keywords is to load todays date with php, so todays date is the first plain text that always loads at the top of the page. This way Google will see the page/date is recent content.
