I have an EMD site that I bought before the last big update so I never really got any traction (I was new to SEO and didn't really know what I was doing).

I now would like to revamp the site turning it into an authority/e-commerce site.

When I run a search there are pretty big sites in the top 10 (Target, Lowes, Ikea, Wal Mart, etc.), but I wouldn't think they're targeting the phrase I'm going for.

Do you think I could rank for the term (about 2500 exact match searches/month)? Or should I just let the site go?

Thanks in advance!

Looks like you're going after product keywords. That's fine. Although I'd suggest targeting buyer oriented keywords and not JUST the product name.

"samsung 42xlcd best price" over "samsung 42xlcd," for example. You'll have an easier time ranking these types of keywords.

I think the better question is, do you now know what you are doing in SEO? If so, then you should be able to outrank a bigger site that just happens to sell the same product.

Thanks everyone. I'm not going after a specific brand, just a category. This isn't it, but for example: "garage lighting."

A few of the titles have the phrase included, I don't see any EMDs on the 1st page, and one of the sites I hadn't heard (still looks like a larger e-tail site) of didn't have any backlinks going directly to the specific page. Also, there are no vids on the first couple of pages.

I know what I'm doing SEO wise I just wanted to get everyone's opinion and see if anyone had outranked sites like the ones mentioned in the OP.

Given everything above what do you guys think? I'm leaning towards going for it, at least just for fun.

I'd be more inclined to stay away from a keyword if I saw a lot of small, nimble SEO-ers going after it versus large companies. Large companies accidentally rank for a lot of keywords. But you can often smoke them with SEO dedicated to those phrases.
