It depends how irrelevant we are going. It can hurt your rankings so I wouldn't advise it. I have a lot less links than my competitors but they are all relevant and I end up ranking above them.

    Relevant is best.

Backlinks from unrelated site will not harm your site but relevant can help you more. Think like this.....you have 100 unskilled employee. they can't help you to complete your work but 1 skilled employee can help you to complete your work easily

interesting question .. what are the data on this ? has anyone found the approximate value or potential risk a link from unrelated sites ?
i would imagine that it can not do damage since you cannot control entirely how is linking back to you..
but it might attract unnecessary attention of a Google algorithm ?

Well, irrelevant links are still links.
    It is all about quality.
I believe that backlinks from your niche can bring you more link juice and possibly more targeted traffic. At least, more likely. But it is still OK for unrelated sites to contain backlinks to your site.
And there are a lot of forums which are devoted to a bunch of various topics so their niche cannot be figured out exactly. Natural links can appear and grow on unrelated sites, so I don't think it may hurt your rankings.

IMO your time is better spent getting backlinks from high-quality related websites.

Authority and quality is must, either its niche relevant or not, doesn't matter...

I think the best way to look at this issue is from the perspective of the customer/viewer. Ideally you want your backlinks to actively bring new visitors, which will be very unlikely if the sites are on completely unrelated topics. The SEO boost is an added bonus, that will be useful in the long-term.

In addition to quality and authority, the context of the link is very important. As long as the backlink makes sense and is "natural", it will help your site. Having lots of spammy backlinks (which know one will be clicking on) can only hurt your business.

A good backlink is definitely worthwhile regardless of how much it relates to the niche. Relevancy is important, and a good quality relevant link should help more than a good quality non-relevant link. But I'd probably take a good quality non-relevant link over a poor quality relevant link without pause.

Whether you get link from relevant or irrelevant site it doesn't matter, your SEO efforts will count if they are from quality site.

It is just good to link to related site but certainly not a surefire.

I have a lot of sites i have ranked from irrelevant site if i may call it so.

I would look at it more on terms of how much the non-relevant link can help you, not necessarily hurt you. I'll explain.

Let say A: You have a quality, relevant site in your niche linking to you. Now let's say B: You have a quality, NON-relevant site linking to you. The (A) relevant to your niche link is going to be much more powerful in terms of ranking. Proof? Do some research on Google's Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI). Google's way of determining whether a website, web page, blog post, article, or any type of content is relevant or not.

I have ranked a number of websites pretty quickly by not even using keyword related anchor text. By just using the brand name or the website name as the anchor text, or even "click here", "visit our website here".. etc. This is my own proof!

I would imagine that having a TON of irrelevant backlinks would probably be a bad thing. But having a few here and there will not be an issue. I would personally stick to relevant links that are in your niche. The closer the better.

      Hope this helps!

Yes it will definitely hurt your sites rankings. Google will see the links and be like "what the heck is this" its irrelevant to your site so it shouldn't be linking back to your site.

Well, unrelated links will help you with your rankings, unless the site is really good, like this forum. Getting links from crappy forums will harm your website.

I'd primarily focus on getting links from highly related sites, they tend to be much more powerful, but of course you can mix in a few from other niches as well (maybe for diversity), just keep the quality high.

I think Google has been trying to make webmasters & SEO's stop getting irrelevant backlinks for a while now because they know it is spam.

Google also considers what content is surrounding your anchor text link so if it is irrelevant then I think there is little to no value.

Only google knows if it's niche related or not. There can be
6 degrees of separation. The way I use squidoo to the max.

Any good link is a good link. Period. Makes no difference if
it's what someone thinks is niche related or not. It's about
the authority and trustworthiness of the site and page.

Why else do people kill to get sig links here? Opening up your
sites to some idiots here, notwithstanding.

The best link by far is contectual, high up, on a page with a
site with authority and related article. Anything other than
that is counted a tad less in varying degrees. How much less
      is what google figures out.

Don't mix up not helping with hurting.

Edu links do not carry a lot of weight in google's eyes. Anyone who
says nonsense like that, run from them. They are peddling
voodoo seo. Look at some of the replies here. Just more
nonsense. Junk links are junk links.

More nonsense: Unrelated links will hurt. Yeah right.

How do you people actually make this stuff up? Because if
you repeated it in front of a mirror, you'd be on your knees
      laughing.

From my point of view, as far as you are NOT following BLACK-HAT SEO, irrelevant links do not hurt you much.

But I would emphasize to have contextual links (Posting your niche related articles on web 2.0) - That works well.

I don't think that they can harm you. All links pointing to your site gives you + reputation and this is still a "link Juice". What differentiate these links from each other is their quality. Links coming from irrelevant sites will help you less and relevant links will help you more.

There are many factors for a quality link, not just relevancy.

The point here is, you don't have to worry about irrelevant sites linking to you. It won't hurt your site.
