The yellow pages all over again?

So I thought I would share something I noticed about directory submissions.

Today while doing submissions for a site, I noticed that after the categorical arrangement of the directory, the individual sites in the category's are listed alphabetically.

Back when there was no internet and the yellow pages was king, companies purposely named themselves so that they would be the first in line alphabetically. There were a lot of company's with names like AAApest control, or AAAplumbing. They wanted to be seen first in the book by potential customers, which is only natural.

In the online directory's, the category areas like (home services), with the first page (starting with A) has a google page rank of anywhere from 1-4. The following pages in the category are all n/a.

So the company's with names or urls starting with an A appear to be getting a lot more juice from being on the first page of the listings in their given category.

It might not mean much, but still, I thought I would share the observation.
