They look expensive. Does anyone know how to do them without using a company?

you can contact media yourself - look for press associations, and media groups etc - if you ahve something specific just do a search for all the publications about that topic - fire off emails to the editors

the reason its expensive is that they have such a huge database and all the connections ready for you - also think of it like this:
if a newspaper gets an email from Joe Nobody vs an email from the president - which one will they open first? or give more attention to - the way distrubution servies work is they built a relationship with the editors and journalists - who are ready to get quality information from them -

another great tip - go to HARO - you can get free media coverage if they have people asking about your topics - can be a great place for promotion (its a bit niche specific - tons of medical and technology things) but otherwise its free

yup, they are very nice to work with as far as the people go -

the catch with the press release - is you need something that actually is news worthy, and based on the databases they have - they dont have ALL niches imaginable -

if you sign up for an account - you will get a call - ask them for a demo - they will show you and also show you exactly which contacts they have depending on what you need your release for -

its all no obligation - so if you are curious i would look into it

You can use a Press Release distribution company like PRweb.com or PRNewswire and depending on which features your purchase you will have to create an account and submit your release.

We offer a WSO (see below) for manual linkbuild and Press Release services distributed through PRweb at half the cost.

As a former person who had to read through press releases, I have a few tips for you.
    1. Your release must be newsworthy. A rehashed sales pitch will land in the garbage immediately.
    2. Releases can come directly from you or from a distributor. Since some of the distributors dump you with everything, seeing something from an actual newsmaker is kinda nice.
    3. Put the most important stuff in the first paragraph, and set it up so that your journalist can copy-paste the first paragraph as a stand-alone bit.
    4. Make it relevant. If you're sending to your own media list, make sure your opening is relevant to your targeted journalists. There's nothing more frustrating than reading a release on a business in Pennsylvania when you cover San Francisco.

Basically divided into 3 categories: Free Sites, Paid Non-Wire, Paid Wires

    1) Free sites: These sites allow you to put your press release for free. There are hundreds of them. You can sign up for an account and post your press release to each of them one by one. Which is quite a hassle, which brings us to the next one.

    2) Paid Non-wire: Many of the press release distribution services in WF and Fiverr are paid non-wires, basically, they help submit your press release to the free sites. So instead of you doing the work, you get it done by them quick and easy.

    3) Paid Wires: This is the best you can get for your release. MarketersMedia, PRWeb, PRNewswire, MarketWire, BusinessWire are the top wires. Their news enter Yahoo News, AssociatedPress, CBSNews, Houston Chronicles, Dow Jones Factiva, LexisNexis and thousands others. Their submission is built using News Feed and automatically run into Editorial of all the media outlets. To ensure they are a wire, ask them for a package that goes into Yahoo News. Yahoo is probably the hardest to get into. If they can't put you into Yahoo News (not Yahoo search), they are most probably not a wire setup. The above MM, PRWeb, PRN, MW and BW all gets into Yahoo News, depending on your press release distribution package.

Resellers: There are also many resellers of PRWeb here in WF. Resellers of PRNewswire are eReleases, WebWire, 24-7 etc. They resell PRN's package at the higher packages. To cater to the resellers, PRWeb and PRN has to jack up their prices on their website, so the reseller has a profit margin. MM is different, no resellers at this moment, so the prices are more affordable with similar reach.

An effective campaign really depends on the pitch and angle of your Press Release.

    Hope this helps.

    Daniel

There are a lot of press release services on the internet. You can use these for backlinking. Google counts them. Don't forget to vary contents for each submission. And also anchor texts.
