Best Order for Maximizing SEO?

I have a jewelry company that is established and successful mainly through social media and email marketing. We have a solid customer base and generate a fair amount of revenue.

We just acquired a better domain name for our product. Basically, it is exactly our name. I want to make the move, however, there are some concerns I have:

1. How will this impact our current traffic and customer base? If we just change it over and put a permanent redirect, will all be ok? Is there anything else I am not thinking about?

2. We have not SEO'd our site yet. Should this be done only after the move to the new domain name?

3. We also want to move from shopify to bigcommerce, will this affect SEO? Should we do this before SEO also?

Thank you for any and all enlightenment

I don't think #1 is a question anybody but you can answer. Sure you can 301 your site and any traffic to the old site will simply get redirected to the new one. But you mention email marketing. If you start sending emails with the new domain will it have the same amount of success versus the old one since your customers are familiar with that.

If you're going to change the domain I wouldn't worry about SEO until you make the move. And changing your ecommerce platform my itself won't make a difference. That's all in the back end. If you use the platform to create product pages than if it produces different content that could impact things.

  • Catfish007,

In terms of your redirect, you will want to consider all the pages you already have indexed in Google as well as those linked to by other sites. Doing a “blanket” redirect is generally not a great idea in terms of user experience. You will want to redirect like pages to like pages. So for example if you have a page indexed in Google that is ranking for “gold bracelets” and users simply get redirected to your home page where there may be no mention of what they were looking for, they may just leave the site.
