Why I Don't Backlink.. At Least The Traditional Way

Today I am going to share with you some of the reasons why I don’t backlink the traditional way anymore. When I first got involved in building websites and ranking them, backlinking at the time was way more important than on-page SEO.

Everywhere I turned there was a new WSO, product, service or software that promised high rankings on Google. Most of it was crap, but a few of them worked extremely well. I was slapping up websites every week and ranking them bad boys on the first page within weeks, sometimes even days. The worse part about it was on-page SEO was not even in my vocabulary (at the time). It was easy pic-kins.. install WordPress, upload a theme, copy and paste some content from another website and backlink my way to the front page of Google. Slap Adsense on the website, watch the money come in.. rinse and repeat. Then Google started their “animal” updates.. Panda, Penguin.. etc. My websites were wiped out, I mean GONE!

The interesting thing about the situation is that my Wife had websites as well and she hated backlinking. She never backlinked and her websites were still holding strong purely off content alone even still to this day. So I started fresh focusing on “keyword research” and content. I ranked a website top four on page one of Google in a matter of days. Actually it was indexed on the first page at the nine spot within a day or so (brand new domain). That was from good content, on-page SEO and keyword research. I never added any backlinks to the site... Since then all I do is keyword research, good content and on-page SEO.. and I still get get on the first page without backlinking... "just my thoughts"

It all depends upon how competitive the keyword is. But I completely agree that keyword selection is most important. If you find a good keyword without a lot of SEO competition than you might be able to rank with just basic on page SEO. But once you start getting into even moderately competitive keywords than backlinking is essential, or you're just going to wait around forever to get your site to rank.

Yes that is true.. It's pretty hard to rank with "competitive keywords" without link juice.

Yes those were definitely the days. ranking was so easy back then but the game has definitely changed. Many touted that content was king back then and still do to this day but what I see today is content is more king now than it ever was and this was Googles intentions , give people good, fresh, quality content and keep on giving it if you want your sites to survive. I also believe that now more than ever, social media optimization is a must. If you are going to build backlinks, relevancy is a must as well. Just my 2 cents worth.

On page seo is very important but as mentioned before, if you're in a competitive niche, you will need links and lots of it. I've been working on 2 campaigns

    Campaign 1 = CPC £25 - #2 in Google over 12 months
    Campaign 2 = CPC £15 - Hit first page 2 weeks ago, position 8 over a 6 month period.

All this was achieved purely through link building. They say content is king...dunno about that as our content isn't anything special. I'd rather say Links is king, content is queen but different strokes for different folks.

That's exactly what I mean.. why do all of that link building over a long period of time when I can just do some good keyword research and rank in days?

Long periods of new unique content and also quality links.

People say the game has changed but really.. good quality links + good content = good rank.

Keep at it long term. Fast ranking by rigging the system never pays off in the long run. You'll get burned and I understand.

I think it will still depend on what niche you are in. Like some people said here, link still counts.

But they are not as valuable as before. It also depend on how competitive your competitors are. There are some niches that are heavily competitive having competitors that uses lots of great contents.

So I think what the OP is pointing out, if you are competing in a niche that is not need heavy link building to rank, why not choose to produce contents that are linkable?

And it was within a month. - was following the contest from when it started to when it ended. Check it out here:.http://www.warriorforum.com/member-c...19-closed.html

When I first started on the net years ago - and up until the Panda revisions - my sites ranked for their keywords from content alone. In those days some backlinks helped reinforce this.

      Backlinking has changed

Post Panda they have nowhere near the power they once had. Backlinking had authority because there were only directories in the early days, and backlinks were a measure of how authoritative you were.

This is crucial. Because Google likes spam as much as you do. Panda was an attempt to pull the plug on spammy backlinks that misused the algorithms.

Google's stated aim is to provide quality answers. Nothing less, nothing more. If your website is relevant and useful, it gets ranked on that merit alone. Spammy backlinks won't boost you any longer - and no few of my friends are now out of work on this account. Oh, and I did warn them. Some have gone back to Amway, if you can believe that.

Getting Backlinking To Work For You Post-Panda

That doesn't mean that backlinking doesn't work - it means that it doesn't mean as much to the search engines. Google looks not at your backlinks, Google looks at how many people are clicking your backlinks.

      Which is something altogether different.

What's more it's fun to have conversations on blogs, and when the people really like you, they will like your sites too. That is when they click through. What's more, those backlinks have real power. Because they bring you laser targeted traffic.

So get creating those backlinks, make them personal and make them fun. That way everybody has a good time on the net.

I would like to point out that in my comment I stated why backlinks are no longer relevant to Google and the other search engines.

If you want backlinks realize that they have one purpose: traffic. Nothing more. Okay? They will do nothing for you save bring you visitors. That is the only thing Google is interested in, that and the length of time your visitors stay on your site.

Now, tell me straight. What do you think a backlink is for in 2013?

And yes, Michael Nguyen is right. If your niche is not closely fought, you won't have much trouble getting ranked. Choosing that is an art in its own right. What is pretty certain is that spammy backlinks won't help here either. Good quality backlinks that bring you good traffic (ie that stay around on your site, return time and time again) will help. But not because they are a backlink. Because your visitor finds your site helpful.
