I haven't put too much thought into them, even the manual ones, but talking to a so called seo expert the other day he was saying that's all he does is manual block comments.

What do you all think?

For SEO purposes then yes. Most blog platforms will have it go through a screening process and even if it were put live, it would most likely be no followed (no page rank passed)

I've always said this, the easier it is to gain the link, the shitter it is.

Blog comments are not useless as far as general SEO is concern. But if you will only aim for links, then you are completely wasting your time.

Notice how those comments flow. They are meant for making great conversations and not for linking purposes only. So it will still depend on how your approach for blog commenting will be.

This is absolutely true. For link building purpose blog comments are some kind of useless as because they are mostly nofollow. But it helps to get engaged with relevant community and get some relevant traffic.

Ruthlessly spamming every blog with a pulse whether it's in your niche or not is not only useless it's a bad idea; if you do get any do follows that way your link will probably be waist-deep in a hotbed of spam links for CHEAP VIAGRA (pr -113 hehehe).

BUT... if you get links from commenting on high PR blogs in your niche, on posts with your keywords, written by choosy bloggers with great content and a no spam policy... those are good links to have! Not at all impossible either, just takes more effort.

The guys speaking about link building are right. I get lots of spammy comments and they get dumped. The days when spammy backlinks worked is dead. Google has trashed them, and more importantly, people are wise to the "buy a faked fake Rolex" "faked Rolexes are out, buy a Faked fake Rolex, they're even cheaper!".

I want relevant interesting comments on my blog, and this is the important bit. If someone likes what you say, they are going to click through to see if you offer more.

Because getting traffic from Google is one thing. Getting highly targeted traffic is quite another - getting traffic that is already interested in what you say is gold dust.

I have engaged in conversations on blogs and had people ask me to work for them. Now as a way of getting new clients I simply cannot think of anything more fun, engaging and profitable. What's more it need only take a few minutes of your day and gets your brain into gear.

Do your blogging comments with a mug of coffee and a bar of chocolate. Relax, have a laugh, engage and learn! That way, everybody will have a good time.

It's what the internet was made for.

brb have to add Moriarty's blog to my autoposter, just got a new shipment of "Fake-tastic faked rolexes! So fake they are practically unreal!" jk

I like the spam I get on my blogs, well not all of it, but what gets past the spam filters can be fun. I like the ones that are way over the top with the generic praise. WARNING: REAL SPAM POST AHEAD!!

Do or no follow doesn't matter.

What matters is the PR, OBL and sometimes niche related.

Tackle this and you have a good bargain.

      Is that really true?

      Thats great news afaic.

Because half my links are no follow. And many of those no follow links are medium pr youtube videos (pr4) which are highly relevant.

People said they don't matter because they're no follow. However, I've been aging these videos for about 6 months, and when I linked them to my site, noticed a major boost.

So that has to mean that no follow links can give you a boost, and that you are right. If thats the case, why are so many people in the dark about this?

Because of pedlars who want to sell their crap. They would give you wrong information and convince you on its accuracy with stats they just pulled out of their magic hat. just so you would buy their junk. Unfortunately, there are more of these guys than real people who give good advise.

No follow links are also valuable especially if they are high PR or come from highly reputable domains or edu/gov domains. Of course they wont give you as much juice as a do follow link but that doesnt mean you dont need No follow. you need the right mix of both.

30/70 -> no follow/do follow is a good rule of thunb but really you just want to build that random element in all your link building where you're not just anal about the right ratios to everything. Its not chemistry you know

Blindly dumping thousands of URLs into an automated too and blasting away is pretty dangerous. But manually leaving legitimate comments (that you'd approve on your own blog) still works just fine.

As a few have already said blog commenting on high pr blogs that are relevant to your niche will provide a quality link and traffic on the back of it. Comment on the blog that has been written with a constructive post and it will most likely get accepted.

No need to worry too much about the anchor text, guest comments with your name and url will also provide value.

For Blog Commenting to work for SEO you have to make sure the comments are coming from sites that are niche specific.

E.g: If you have a Finance site make sure to comment on Finance articles and News.

I've never found this to be a requirement. I've commented on plenty of non-niche related blogs and helped rank pages.

That said, I still love commenting on new posts from niche-related blogs in order to drive traffic. It's one of the most overlooked ways to do so.

Fire up Scrapebox, plug in a few hundred niche related keywords, tick "blogs," set it to display results from the past 24 hours, and run them through an Alexa check to get an estimation on how popular they are.

You can generate some pretty decent traffic if you're leaving QUALITY comments on new posts from active, niche-related blogs.

You should never focus all of your efforts on getting one type of link. Try to diversify your link profile as much as possible. That means get links from as many different types of sites as you can. Blog comments are definitely a good/useful means of backlinks, but you should make sure they are manually submitted, in your niche, relevant to the page you're linking to, in ENGLISH, relevant to the content you're commenting on, don't have hundreds of other comments approved. Basically, the easier it is to have the comment approved, the more worthless the link is.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7727849].message }}

I second the "diversify" your links approach.

You have to get all types of links, getting links from various sources is always the way to go. You'll almost never rank with just ne main type of source.

      Well, yeah.

If I come across a blog with a lot of PR1, PR2, PR3, etc, posts I'll first comment on a RECENT post. If it's approved within a fair amount of time, I'll then go back and leave a few comments on aged posts with PR. I've found that doing this greatly improves the approval rate on posts with PR.

Blog owners tend to approve comments on newer posts a little more than older posts, in my experience. By leaving a good comment on a newer post you're building a little bit of trust, and you're going to have a much greater chance of getting additional comments approved on that blog.

99% of all comment links are automatically appended with a "nofollow" attribute, so forget about getting link juice- that was stopped dead in its tracks in '08.

However, comments are STILL worthwhile if you plan to post something worthwhile there in the first place. "Nice Blog" will not give you the traffic you are looking for-- you need to post something useful to get fresh eyes on your site.

Just remember that you are writing for the 5-10 people who would actually read comments, and would actually click on your link to learn more about the product or service you are offering.

I have a local site ranked top 3 with nothing but blog / forum posts.

I did search blog posts with previous PR in my niche as well as forum posts, but it's worked well and it was free

    1. Install SEOquake tool bar to show PR on google serps
    2. Find high pr blog
    3. Type in site:blogname
    4. Browse through the pages until you find a high pr page you can comment on
    5. Make it look like a real post
    6. Profit

I also know of a realtor in my area who has his real estate blog ranked by doing nothing but blog commenting and forum posts. He knew nothing about SEO, just offered his services / advice on other realty sites and ended up being ranked.

Do I suggest loading up a program to spam thousands of links to thousands of pages? No...

But I do suggest searching for high PR pages on related blogs and actually commenting on them. Your actual time invested in doing this will be much more valuable.

I have not seen it be useful even when I've done it consistently to related blogs and with relevant content. I think there are other better ways.

I've also seen that just plain old good content that gets shared by real people is still one of the best ways.

I have some sites that may not be on page one of google but have gotten shares on so many relevant forums and facebook and twitter feeds that it gets me sales every single day.

Manual blog commenting on relevant blogs is a useful link building method next to your other link building methods (publishing articles, commenting on forums, submitting links to directories and social bookmarking sites, perhaps even guestblogging). It all adds to a nice backlink profile with a lot of variation.

Where things go wrong is when you use spammy automated methods like buying 1000 blog comments for $5. In that way you ruin your backlink profile, i.e. complete discrepancy between the number of blog comment links with respect to your other links and more importantly, it ruins your anchortext variation.
When you buy one of these automated blog comment submission the keyword will be submitted hundreds or thousands of times without any variation (sometimes you can spin your keyword phrase a few times but still you'll end up with hundreds of identical anchortext keyword links). Google hates it when most backlinks to your site have identical anchortext a clear sign of over optimization.

So, find some good relevant blogs and put manual relevant comments and stay away from blog comment services.

Basically it just comes down to leaving comments that you would approve on YOUR own blog. That's it. I know that some complain about approval rates. But a lot of people are leaving lousy comments. "Thanks! Awesome post!" won't get it done.

Spend a minute or two leaving a legitimate comment that relates to the post and you'll be surprised at the approval rates. And don't spam your anchor text in your name, or add links to your comments. Although, plenty of blog owners tend to be OK with something like: "Jeff From the Gardening Supplies Shop" (Again, as long as you're leaving good comments.)

One of the best commenting techniques I did was going to Google News searching for relevant articles, reading the articles and posting a thought provoking comment with a link to the most relevant page on my site. I don't know if the links gave me any weight in Google, but I got a whole lot of traffic from people copying and pasting my link in their browsers. It was a niche about nursing homes.
