Wordtracker Data vs Adwords Data

On one of my keywords Wordtracker tells me to expect 95 searches per day. But I can see that my adwords ad for this keyword generated over 30,000 search impressions in the last month. This is 10 times what wordtracker predicts.

Why the massive discrepancy? I am completely confused.

  • Verify that you do have adwords on EXACT searches instead of Broad or Phrase. This tends to mess a lot of people up & is what I would expect as the cause of your problem.
  • Yes, check for EXACT match but I am sure you will still see some difference in the figures which is acceptable. You can also check new G keywords tool HERE.
  • The keyword in question in adwords is an exact match with the quotes "keyword". I contacted wordtracker and they said that their data represents about 1% of all US Search. I asked them if that means that if word tracker predicts 10 searches per day, I should expect 1,000 searches per day across all US search engines and they said yes, but not to rely on that 100%.

      You got some bad info there. Wordtracker uses a small subset of data, but they then extrapolate an estimate for all searches. So that means if it predicts 10 searches a day, that's what they are predicting.

      As others have pointed out, you are likely not choosing the correct settings in the AdWords Keyword Tool. There is a "Match Type" drop-down selector that you must set to "exact" if you want accurate search volume data, using quotes won't do.
  • Both are good tools for anaylsis of keywords but I think adwords is more trusty and gives exact match if you select it from the drop down menu of it..
