How does google view sub-domains?

I have started work on a domain and I desire to have sub-domains branching off it reviewing different categories of products:

ex: domainname.com
category1.domainname.com
category2.domainname.com

My question is, how will google view and more importantly rank these domains? As their own individual sites or as part of the primary domain name?

Individual sites. It's much better to have it all on the same domain. Why not just have them in subdirectories? www .example .com/category

      ichl13 is correct here!

Below pattern works well, it has been followed by majority of fortune 500 companies like Dell, HP etc.

      yourwebsite.com/category

here is the dilemma I'm facing.

I'm planning on doing reviews for a certain general categories (ex: fitness products)

The theme I'm using has a feature that allows me to rank the products using a ranking widget that also includes star ratings. But what I found out last night is even if I do a review on two different categories (ex: treadmills and stationary bikes) - the ranking widget views them as the same thing and doesn't differentiate.

That's the only reason I wanted to use a sub-domain

You could separate into categories as mentioned above but if the products are highly varied why not create 3 different websites to keep a strong theme throughout each website?

Categories could work as well, but I would only be using categories if there is at least some sort of link between to products for sale.

    Ie;

Watches, Necklaces, and Rings I would keep on one website separated into categories.

Tennis Balls, Pet food, and Shoes I would develop 3 different websites for.

I would not go into using subdomains for any of these circumstances.

I would go even farther and make separate sites for Watches, Rings etc. This is best way to keep power in concentration. There are 1000000's of watches and rings... Sub-domains are not efficient in this case.

It's a much better solution to try to get a coder to change the plugin how you want it. Otherwise, I'd suggest you still use sub directories instead of subdomains. You can install separate wordpress sites on subdirectories just the same as a subdomain if that's really what you want.

thanks. In this case, It would be to change the theme right since the widget comes built in with the theme. Is that possible?
