Left 1 Comment On A High Pr Blog, Turned into 1,600 backlinks, Google Seems Mad Now. What Can I Do?

I'm trying to avoid pissing google off as much as possible. And most of the time I go out of my way to avoid problems. But I never realized this could happen, where you leave 1 comment on a blog, and that comment turns into 1,600 backlinks overnight.

The comment I left, was on a high pr blog, that was partially related to my site. But not super related to the point where I would want that many links coming from the site. So I left 1 manual comment, and a couple days later noticed my ranks dropping for my 2 top keywords.

I went into my webmaster tools, and noticed it recorded 1,600 backlinks all coming from that 1 site. Someone said that means my link is displaying on all their pages, and it should go away soon, but its been up there for about 3 weeks now.

Since my site is only 4 months old, and I don't have too many backlinks (only around 70 if you subtract the 1,600), I think these backlinks destroyed my relevancy in googles eyes. Or google assumed I was spamming a blog, and lowered my rankings because of it.

So my question is this. Does google actually know I wasn't spamming a blog?

Furthermore, should I try leaving a bunch of comments, to see if I can get them approved, so it pushes my comment off all his main pages?

I don't want all these backlinks. Even though its a quality blog, its not relevant enough to my site to have that many links coming from it.

What would you do? Is this a big deal or no? Because it definitely seems to have affected my 2 most popular keywords.

I've had this happen before and it never caused any issues. There are a lot of blogs that have a "recent comments" widget on each page. And I'm sure Google is smart enough to know this. But if you're super-paranoid, I don't see any harm in leaving additional comments in order to get your link off the list.

As far as your rankings for your 2 keywords, maybe it's just a coincidence?

If you are going to do blog posting for visitors or links, Your idea of going slow on backlinks directly to your site is good. I get a few blog comment links to my sites, and this has happened to me as well with site wide links. If it is an active blog, it will work its way off after a while.

It can be worrisome.Your site page listings are going to go up and down anyways. Don't stress too much, we all go through this. Easier said than done... I still worry from time to time.

Best thing to do nowdays is the few backlinks directly to your site and more (but still slowly) to squidoo, blogger, web 2.0 sites along with pdf and videos pointing to your site. And/Or a few of your own websites all pointing to your main site. It creates a better buffer.

You will be able to do more that way, and not have your site bounce around nearly as much - it will be more stable as it ages and gets the high quality links pointing to it.

I still dont get this whole backlink thing, if mass linking does affect your sites rankings whats to stop you targeting a competitors site and getting them whacked?
Google must realise this could happen.

Google must realise this could happen.

        I'll give you several reasons:

        1) Their sites are a lot older / a lot more established.

        2) They have a lot more links they've built over the course of the last 2-3 years.

        3) Google trusts them a lot more.

I'm sure this affected my rankings and I'll tell you why.

I was slowly building highly relevant/quality links to my site, and google was definitely rewarding me with page 2 rankings for my 2 most competitive keywords after only 3 months. I had already gone through the honey moon period, and was trying to prove to google I was a trusthworthy site. For the last 3 weeks of month 3, my rankings were very slowly improving every few days.

However, because my site was still fairly new, I realized my "probationary period" was nowhere near over.

In an attempt to diversify my links, I started posting on some high pr blogs. However, some of them were barely relevant to my niche. Like my niche is mold, and the blog I posted on talked about the flu, which is barely relevant to mold. Its relevant in a very indirect way.

I still figured 1 link wouldn't matter, so I left a quality comment.

Long story short, the link got approved, then my webmasters tool registered 1,600 links the following day. Thats when I realized I had 1,600 mostly irrelevant links pointing to a 3 month old website.

I immediately sensed it was bad. Then what do you have it, the following day both my keywords dropped to page 6, and haven't budged for about 4 weeks now. I continued building highly relevant links, but I think these 1,600 nonrelevant links are killing my websites relevancy in googles eyes.

Considering I only have about 50 relevant links pointing to my site. So a very small percent of my backlink profile is now relevant. So right now, like 90% of my backlink profile is completely irrelevant.

In conclusion, I absolutely believe you can harm a >>3 month old<< website if you tried hard enough. If the site is much older, and has an established backlink profile, that seems like a different story to me. A lot of guys on WF have already said that sitewide links can harm a site, so why can't this?

        -Red

ps. It wasn't just those 2 keywords that dropped either. They were my most competitive keywords. However, I had about 14 keywords ranking in the top 100 before this happened.

Now, I only have 6 keywords in the top 100. And like I said, everything was stable for a long time. So I'm positive this screwed my rankings up. There is no way this is just a coincidence.

OK, so this is more about a sites trust in google`s eyes? A new site with some crappy backlinks would get hit but an aged domain would not?

Have you ever heard of "trust score"?

Even though I'm a amateur, and even though I get a lot of my info on WF (which is full of misinformation), I have read various books on SEO. Books from people who are generally a lot more successful than 95% of the people on here.

And all of them agreed on the fact that websites gain more trust, the older they get, and the better their backlink profiles are. They also spoke about young sites in a way where they are on "probation" with google. So just a few bad links, can seriously hurt its rankings.

Now nothing is concrete in SEO, I realize that. But I definitely believe you can kill a young websites relevancy (say 3-6 months old) by blasting it with crap links.... or simply blasting it with a bunch of nonrelevant links.

Google wants the most relevant websites up top. People on here know enough to know its important to get highly relevant links. So the opposite should be true too. Getting a bunch of nonrelevant links, can NOT be good for a site. Someone came in here arguing that a recent comments widget is syndicated content, and would not affect my rankings.

HOWEVER. If Google webmaster tools is stupid enough to count that comment, in the recent comments widget, as >>1,600<< backlinks, then its OBVIOUSLY counting it as 1,600 backlinks. 1,600 NONRELEVANT backlinks. And ever since this happened, I have NOT been able to rank my site for 14 of my keywords, back to the positions they were in before.

So I am confident that google applied some type of filter to my site. In a couple of weeks I will know 100% for sure.

I mean christ, even ahrefs is counting them as backlinks. If you plug my site into ahrefs right now, its the most f##ked up looking backlink profile you can imagine, thanks to these stupid widgets. I just love how people have to come on here and say it doesn't matter. But if it can trip webmaster tools AND ahrefs, then they're OBVIOUSLY registering as backlinks. For now on, like I said, I'm staying the hell away from blog commenting, regardless of whether its manual.

This is nonsense. Why are you worrying about something so ridiculous? When somebody links to you in the footer of their website, do you go all worried and make threads everywhere?

OMG, SOMEBODY HAS LINKED TO ME IN THEIR FOOTER AND NOW I HAVE 500 LINKS FROM ALL OF THEIR PAGES!!! PLEASE, HELP ME!!!!!!!!!

Nonsense. I understand that you're relatively new to SEO, but one measly link isn't going to kill off your business.

Your keywords dropped because your domain isn't worthy of being there for those domains. You still have keywords ranking, so you haven't been penalized.

One of my root domains dropped from #1 to #4 after 1-month at #1. I don't care, it's an algorithm update. Just carry on, write more content, more build links. Time is the biggest factor here.

Look, I have one website ranking #2 right now for a 4,000/month exact. That website has 1-crap backlink, and is 3-years old (the same content for 3-years). It took a whopping 30-months to get ranked at #2 (I wrote 1page on it and left it).

Just chill out dude. SEO takes time. If you're still not ranking after 6-12months, THEN start panicking. Do you think Amazon ranked well in their first 2-months?

You sound like the one relatively new.

Penguin created the exact penalty the OP stated. Too many links from 1 domain gets you penalized now. Period.

Blogrolls, sitewide comments, and footers are not good links.

OP I'd email the site and ask them to remove the comment ASAP.

Oh yes. So a random girl decides to footer link to my cooking blog. She has 2,500 posts. So, because of that one footer link, Google now penalizes my site?

You're talking rubbish. Penguin is a system that looks at everything from the whole, not one link from one domain. If it was 20 footer links with the same anchor, then sure.

Exactly. I'm sure Google is "smart" enough to sort all of this out. But yeah, if that same footer link with the same anchor text was spread across 100 blogs, then I could definitely see it being an issue.

Google dropped you as a precaution in case you are spamming. They obviously know your links are coming from the same domain. Try to build links from other sources and don't fixate on this too much. The syndicated link will soon go away.

Again, ridiculous. So, Google now penalize and "drop" sites based on them gaining publicity? Google strives to offer readers the absolute best experience. A viral topic/site is the best fit for their customers (THE SEARCHERS).

The problem is most likely that the 1600 links have the same anchor text.

The "recent comment" status will work off eventually and the amount of links from that site will drop - in the meanwhile build some more links on other sites with completely different anchor text. The idea is to dilute the effect of the 1600, and at the same time give your link profile a more varied look.

Your site should bounce back once things have worked their way through.

This happned to me several times... This should be a widget like last comments (or something related). If it is a nofollow backlink, everything is OK. The problem is if it is a dofollow. Then you should wait for the widget to stop displaying your name (if more comments are writter after yours) -> you can easily make this happen faster -> just write some comments and do NOT use a website!

Otherwise you should wait for this to happen, wait also for Google Dance effect and if everything is OK, you should see that those 1,600 backlinks (minus 1) are gone -> 1 will be there -> the comment, but it will be visible ONLY on the page/article you wrote the comment!

Lol. Says the one writing in all caps and exclamation points. :p

As far as "it took 30 months", you should have just been honest and said "it took no time". 1 link and 1 page isn't exactly considered trying. Seems pretty clear that you randomly noticed it one day and were as confused as I am right now trying to figure out wtf your point is.

For the other people talking about anchor text and google potentially suppressing rankings because of spamming, that makes more sense.

I was expecting the comment to be off the widget in a week or 2, but its been there for 4 weeks now. So apparently google thinks I have a site wide link, with the same anchor text 1,600 times. For a fairly new site, that sounds like a problem.

Either way, I have 1 comment left I'm waiting to get approved, and hopefully that will do the job.

For now on, I'm avoiding sites with recent comment widgets. Especially if I'm backlinking a new site. 1,600 links all with the same anchor text... obviously can cause a problem. I doubt google says "oh look its just a recent comments widget! lets leave him alone!" F**K that shit.

Seriously, this isn't the Nazi era where Google is trying to kill off all the webmasters in the world. Where do you get this stuff?

So now, if I genuinely write a comment, and the webmaster has a sidebar which links to my comment, I automatically get penalized? No. You see, it's so easy to think back and say, "Oh yes, I dropped in the SERPs and it's because of that ONE comment I did!!!".

You never seem to understand that Google's algorithms change weekly, if not daily, and sites go up and down all of the time. One sidebar link that links to your comment on 1,500 pages has not caused your website's keywords to tank. If you still want to believe that's the case, then so be it, you'll struggle to win the SEO game long-term.

People here think their all "gurus" and it's ridiculous. The same crap is sprouted time and time again. "BE CONSISTENT WITH LINK BUILDING!!", "GET YOUR EDU LINKS HERE!!". When people repeat the same crap over and over, it's only a matter of time before the sheep start to believe it.

As for the anchor text, ridiculous again. Have you ever stopped to think that the sidebar acts as syndicated content? It links to the ORIGINAL comment (on the post), and then to your website. It's the same as your homepage, you know, where you COPY the excerpt, and then LINK to the page.

Rant over. Stop believing everything everybody tells you.

Look all I can say is I had 14 keywords ranking between pages 2-10 before this happened.

Right after the links registered in webmaster tools and ahref, 8 of those keywords fell off the face of the earth, and my 2 target keywords dropped down to pages 13. When they were consistently both on page 3 for a while.

To me, that is too dramatic of an effect to consider dancing. If you also consider the fact that I've been building high quality/highly relevant links for the last month, and nothing has still improved, I have to conclude that my site has some type of filter applied to it. It has to be some type of spam or anchor text filter.

Either way, the comment finally fell off today, so I'm just waiting for google to clear up the links in webmasters. Then I'll wait a couple weeks and see what happens.

If nothing gets better, then perhaps I'll have to assume you're right. I jut really think its a filter of some type causing all of this.

Either way, the comment finally fell off today, so I'm just waiting for google to clear up the links in webmasters. Then I'll wait a couple weeks and see what happens.

If nothing gets better, then perhaps I'll have to assume you're right. I jut really think its a filter of some type causing all of this.
If you were never page 1, then don't worry. It's just dances and re-alignment of SERPs. If you were #2, and you dropped to page 18, then sure, go ahead and worry. But when you're page 3-4 and losing places, it's nothing to worry about, seriously.

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

I agree with Julia here, she says it perfectly, "Your site is still very new, so fluctuations in rankings is normal at this stage. Your drop in ranking could be due to a number of factors (eg: the Google dance) If you want your site to continue to increase in the SERP, you need to continue to build high quality backlinks."

I think it is a coincidence.

Gotta agree here. There are a few sites I have over a thousand backlinks from because they are displayed in the recent comments section. I never noticed an immediate drop but obviously my keywords are fluctuating daily, welcome to the life of a young website. I'm really not sure what the point of this thread is though, your whining about being hit in SERP making a causational claim with no proof, and you reject anyone trying to offer you good advice.

This was back when people were still making conjectures on what the problem might be and what they might need to do. I don't see that it has an answer about multiple links from one site. Blogroll is not the same. (If anyone has a definitive answer about this, especially from Google, I would like to read it).

"Disclaimer: The "tips" below are a collection of ideas from SEOs at WebmasterWorld. This is a summarization of the thread and in no way should be conveyed as actual strategies that are proven to work. Like I said above and below, since no one has recovered from the Penguin update yet, these tips are not proven.

        Google Penguin Recovery Tips:

        De-optimize the web site
        Increase quality links to pages
Make sure link anchor text is more natural
        Remove links from blogrolls
Scale back the internal link anchor text
        Exact match domains hurt
        Practice negative SEO
Move content to a new domain
Build a smaller site with very few pages
        Write better content
Add more social elements, i.e. Google+ Sharing
Site audit to determine problem areas
Think more long term with my site, stop taking short cuts"

For a newish site, the OP or any person can expect these ups and downs even if it were only a few new links or changing 5 words on a page. Something changed, now Google re calibrates where the page should be in the listings.

You will be able to do more that way, and not have your site bounce around nearly as much - it will be more stable as it ages and gets the high quality links pointing to it.

Blogroll links are exactly the same as a sitewide footer, or comment widget.

          Who here actually SEO's?

Has anyone here made $xx,xxx a month from SEO?

Nevermind, I'll just stop sharing since I'm clearly wrong and you guys have the answers...

What if it was 3 sitewide recent comment links on 3 irrelevant sites displaying over 3,000 backlinks on a 4 month old site that only started off with 50 relevant backlinks in the first place?

Because now ahrefs is displaying a lot more of these types of links pointing to my site:

Feel free to look yourself: Mold Remediation NJ | MMRG Mold Remediation & Basement Waterproofing-

Plug that into ahrefs, then tell me thats not the most f##ked up backlink profile you've ever seen.

This should not hurt you. There's no abuse of anchor text since you used a name in the comment.

Clearly, though, that is a very weak link profile. 3 whole domains linking in?

You need to get more links than that!

RedShifted, why do you care what Ahrefs and Majestic etc show you? They are not tied into Google. They are generic services which list backlinks they find through their poor crawlers.

In our day of age, do you really think Google treats one backlink as 5,000 backlinks because of a sitewide widget? For god sake, they can work out a companies local location through citations. This is 2013 now, not 2002.

One of my blogs has over 100,000 backlinks on Ahrefs. When it comes to referring domains, it's more like 100 domains. My domains ranking absolutely fine, and has been for over 9-months.

It's just so easy to get all worked up over this stuff. Don't worry about your rankings until you're in the top 5. If you're on page 2 or further down, then you're not doing very well to start with. You're going to bounce up and down like crazy.

Once you get to about #7, you'll start to stabilize and the movements will be (usually) days apart, and you'll only move up or down a few spots (unless it's a penalty).

One of my sites is on page 5, and it regularly goes up to page 2, then back to page 7. It's nothing to worry about.

Again though, I put it down to experience. Once you make a success of this site, you'll stop worrying in the future. Just take it from me, a guy who has built over 200 amazon sites and hundreds of adsense sites.. There's nothing to worry about.

My blog is 4 months old and most of my posts were ranking in the top 5 pages of Google and then out the blue, they go missing but then come back again. Rankings change all the time, you can't control Google, it controls you. I had over 100 keywords ranking but then suddenly it dropped to 40 but now I have it back up to around 60, it all comes down to making your posts and page look popular by getting social likes and shares, backlink building and so on.

You're right. Google DOES pretty much control you. And they are wildly unpredictable. Which is why I switched from higher competition phrases and massive backlinking campaigns to lower competition, but primarily buyer oriented, phrases.

I'd rather spend my time creating content that should be fairly easy to rank using a few tried-and-true methods, vs spending most of my time backlinking and crossing my fingers with higher competition keywords.
