Hello fellow warriors,

Have you experienced a massive rank decrease in SERPs (around 90 places) when you suddenly start building backlinks to a site again (after a couple of months of not doing so)?

I think it has happened before but not sure if rank decreased that much.

Hoping to hear your advice and comments.

  • Yes, that is known to have happen. Backlinks are about consistency. If you aren't continually building links, and all of a sudden a bunch appear; Google thinks something is up. If there is a gap in backlink creation... start off slow. Slowly build up, don't just throw a few thousand at the site and hope for the best. Usually starting back up will result in your site decreasing in SERPs... keep it up though; it will bounce back.
  • Yeah, you have to keep things constant.

Generally when my sites get a bunch of new links they drop for a little bit. But I just keep steadily building links and then they come back stronger then ever!
  • I give up building links for SEO, Instead I post quality content hoping for natural links.

    • this is the great thinking. i personally prefer this method, and always create unique and high quality content for my blog. all of backlinks to my blog are natural. i didn't created a single backlink to my blog. my blog gets 150+ visitors per day from Google. it has 61 posts only.

    • When you will grow big, you will have natural links for sure. If you have already grown big, Congratulation.
    • Tried that too, but I'm not having the best of luck with it.
  • Thanks for your reassurance guys, and sorry for posting this thread in the main IM discussion forum alexa. I'll check well the most appropriate forum for my threat next time
  • Yeah this normally happens to sites that are not authority sites with powerful back link but bounce back real quick too.

On the other side, it could also be as a result of the link you are building, maybe you are not taking the anchor diversity into consideration.
  • Definitely agree with Mike on this one. I check my top competitors links everyday and my #1 competitor hasn't built a new link in over a month. As far as I can tell that is.

However, I'm still not sure you can throw a couple of thousand links at a new site, and have google be ok with it. My site was holding on page 2 for a while, and something knocked it off fairly quickly. When I went to investigate my backlinks, I noticed a blog comment I left was reading in my webmasters tool as 1,600 backlinks. Apparently its been stuck in his recent comments widget.

I'm still not sure what the total affect will be however because my site went from page 2, down to page 13, up to page 9, and now its at 7. So its possible my site is just doing a dance for all I know. But I do know it was very stable prior to getting those 1,600 links.
  • Build link consistently and pay us consistently. Pure business tactic.
  • Nope. But then again, how exactly do you build your backlinks? How many, how often?
  • No I personally have never experienced this. Google has changed the way it looks at backlinks. It is now looking for relevant backlinks. This is the key. This is why so many domains lost their spots after Google introduced this change.

    • Actually, after re-reading your initial comment, my comment was more directed at the other poster.

Consistently building backlinks and Constantly building backlinks are two different things.

My comment was directed at the morons who say you should build XX links a day/week/month all the time to look natural or whatever other BS excuse they come up with for it.

Constantly building backlinks is fine, meaning that you never really stop building and/or attracting links. Your competitors are unlikely to stop, so you cannot either.

Sorry for the confusion, but in my eyes consistent building and constant building are two different things. Hope that makes sense.

  • Link Building is not bad, after all this is the way to get recognition in Online community.

but if you start building links from sites which are considered to spam sites or if they use any unethical means than you may encounter sudden drop in ranking.

Why don't you use the following means of link building:

    Forums Discussion
    Article creation and submission
    Gust Posting
    Social Bookmarking
    Question + Answering
    Social Media
    Classified Posting
    etc.

If you follow the above tactics then you don't face with this kind of problem.
  • Yea, I'm doing all of them monitorscout, except classified posting. But as you know, backlinking is an arduous process and sometimes I interrupt the flow when I get busy with something else.

Thanks everyone for your experience-based advice.

  • Employ writing unique and fresh articles, social bookmarking, article marketing, blogging, blog commenting, guest posting, yahoo answers, forum posting, video creation and use of social media.
  • Sounds like the typical Google dance. Keep building authority links
  • I've tested this myth with some of my sites. I was busy for a few months, so I haven't build any links. I've then started slow - first, I added some articles, then added some more articles, and then started building my first links (after a week or two). This way, Google can see that there is a reason why new links are coming (new content) and it looks more natural.
  • Its always important to ensure that your offsite activities for the website are a continous process to maintain the keywords positions as well as traffic, it does not mean that once you gain top positions that you stop doing SEO activities then you will again land up in trouble of loosing the traffic as well as rankings.

  • This is totally normal and most all SEO companies will even inform you of this in the event you hire them for their services....

More importantly, it sounds like you may have created this site, started building some backlinks, and stopped all of a sudden. Try not to do that again. As long as you stay consistent and keep getting high authority, highly related links you will be alright.
