Are specific country domains worth it if I am not targeting that country?

Hello,

I have the possibility of getting cheap country specific domains like .com.something (for example .com.co) but that country is not my primary market.

Is it still worth it to create niche sites using that domain extension trying to target users in the U.S. for example or should I go straight to .com domains (much more expensive)

Thanks for your help!

These days, Google doesn't take so much interest in the extension. It is a factor, but not like before.

I had my .nl sites ranking nicely in the US - pre Panda. If I spent any time on them I could get them back there.

There are better ways to carve out a niche. Dig deep into what motivates your purchasers, and head in that direction. Because most marketers use keyword tools to find niches, this is still a rich vein to mine. A .com domain for this will chime with your target audience - be available - and the traffic source all but untapped. What's more, those asking the questions will already be frustrated at the lack of answers.

    So provide some!

    Does this help any? M

It's really going to depend on what the sites are for. For example, some people may not feel comfortable when you're using a foreign domain and then stating you're based in another country. And I definitely think Google takes .com, .net, and .org's into consideration more than other niched ones especially if you're running an English site.

It would be useful to get a country related domain, if you are not targeting that country's traffic.

Thanks a lot for all the help!
My intention is to use the domains mainly for 'review sites' although if they do work on Google I might use them for more sites.

      Thanks again!

This can be a fact while a US person is seeking information, he or she may not have enough faith in the information at a .nl site. But it cannot be a major barrier for your ranking.
