Unique content for ranking?

We all know that unique good relevant content is great for rankings but my question is do you need to update and add content to sites, even if they have been ranking quite well. This seems to divide the SEO community this issue. And btw this is only from a search engines point of view not your visitors.

Thanks
Tom.

  • I haven't added content to one of my sites for the last 2 years and its still making good money from organic traffic such as Google and Yahoo. Pages on site still rank well in search engines. Thats coming from a site with almost no links.

  • Content is main part in seo..Google loves fresh and unique content and hates duplicate and spammy content...

    • Good content links out to other quality sites.

If you abandon a site, it will get link-rot.

Bad external links, which are under YOUR control, will be a big negative sign for your website.

It may take a while to happen, but eventually, I'd expect your rankings to fall.
  • Unique content is your key to successfully increasing the search engine ranking of your website. The content you write must have the right keywords to stir website traffic. Carefully select the keywords you want to include in your article. The more a search engine trusts that your site contains unique and relevant content, the more it will display pages in your site to people searching for related topics.

    • That is one of those questions nobody can say for sure. As a general rule, you need to keep adding and updating content for better rankings. However, sites can stay high in the rankings, at least for a while, without any changes.

  • If you were designing a search engine, what would you do? Would you punish a website simply because it stopped adding content, even if the content is very useful and liked by users?

  • If it is ranking better why to take risk of adding the content, you should only think of changing the content when you feel the ranking are going down and the website is not performing well.
  • Content Is The Most Important Element After The Updates In Google Algorithms. The Unique, Quality And Relevant Niche Content Provide Help To Get Good Results In Online Business Promotion.
  • No, no, no. What's with all the misinformation? When will the myth of quality content is the most important element to rank well die a horrible death?

Just how exactly do you think that Google is able to read your content and then come to a decision as to whether it's high quality or not? Now backlinks on the other hand....

    Isn't quality content subjective?

I would love to carry out a test. One of you guys can write an article that makes me think, love, smile, cry, change my life - or in other words, the best damn article you can. Hell, get a professional writer to write it for you. While you're doing that, I'll send a whole load of high quality backlinks to my 300 word post. Then we'll see which post ends up ranking better.

    • What you think of quality is different to a search engine. You're right, Google isn't the greatest interpreter of language but it can measure expected behaviour. They might think a quality article is one that people read for ages because it doesn't need supplementary info, talk about, share with their friends and link to from their blogs.

Surely it's not the one that people click on, ignore and return to the search page to find another better result.

It doesn't have to be unique and that's been shown time and time again, but a copy and pasted or spun article probably won't be quality as discussed above.

  • Haha, split down the middle of the forum, but the general feel seems to be that its not as important as everyone makes out. I know it is for your visitors because better articles better conversions yadda yadda ya but as long as your first article is pretty good, it seems we do not need to update the site.
  • It depends on type of content and competition. I have a 12-year old domain which has not updated for almost 10 years. The rankings for many keywords have been getting better year after year. Of course, the sites are naturally linked by many edu sites without any link building or promotion.
  • You must perform writing unique and fresh articles, social bookmarking, article marketing, blogging, blog commenting, guest posting, yahoo answers, forum posting, video creation and use of social media.

  • I also want to ask one thing about content?? if i have fresh article then how many sites i can syndicate my article????
  • I'm with dreamtoreality on this one. Good content is content that keeps customers on your webpage. That's it. It has nothing to do with the number of words, posts etc.

At the end of the day, Google is a bot. It's not going to read your site and say "Wow, this website is so amazing. Dog trainers everywhere will love this content. I must give it a better rank". It judges content based on traffic stats, social signals, page hops etc.

I have "skeleton" sites (less than 200 words) outranking blogs with 1000+ words and 80% unique content (according to Copyscape). In my tests, I see no evidence that "good" content has any influence on rankings.

Content should please your visitors/buyers, not the search engines. If you have crappy content then your visitors leave your site before you know it and that is a factor for SE rankings.
  • If you are happy with your results, why break it. However, i am a blogger so it makes no sense to me to not want to provide quality content often. But perhaps you are not looking to engage with people just make money.
