It is extremely important for news sites to be SEO friendly, because changing of site structure and alteration of important meta tags can hurt SEO in the future. So, what is important during website development?

  1. Keyword research: Determine at least 3 main keywords and as many long tail keywords as you can.
  2. Write great site title and meta description that include those keywords.
  3. Avoiding using excessive amount of Javascript or Jquery during your site building process.
  4. Use <table></table> to structure your whole site if possible. ( Google really likes content wrapped inside of table tag. )
  5. Name your site images with title and alt description.
  6. Include your primary keywords in headings (h1,h2,h3...) and link the primary keyword back to your homepage in every page.
  7. Darken some of your keywords. (You don't put bold tags in, just dark it with a different color.)
  8. Footer link your primary keyword to your home page.
  9. Create a sitemap page for Google bot.
  10. Include social media plugins in your site.
  11. Write converting content that guide your users through your site, decreasing bouncing rate.
  12. Write blog posts that concentrated on your long tail keywords.
  13. Create a 404 error page so that Google bot does not fall off the cliffs on your site.
  14. Edit htaccess file redirect your site from non-www to www.
  15. Have a terms and policy page.

Off-Site SEO tips from my own experience.

  1. Do not buy links. People say that paid links will not de-value your site, Google will just ignore it, otherwise competitor can hurt your SEO by buying links for you. that't not true. Google is like the god of internet, they will know every paid links. I have experienced too much of that. My keyword dropped from 8th place to nothing in 24 hours after i bought 2 PR3 keyword related site links.
  2. Use Open Site Explorer to check your competitor's backlinks and see what links pass most value to their site. You should get those links also.
  3. Link Exchange is beneficial. Some rumor says that Google does not like link exchange or three way exchange. That is not true. Link exchange will show Google your keyword relevancy. Just make sure that your partner website does not link to some spam site or mal-ware site, and you are exchange link with their top level domain. Example of lower level domain: lower.topleveldomain.com
  4. Forum Posts generate great SEO value for your site. Find your keyword related forums and write great posts to share with others. The link from popular posts really generate great SEO value. Example: A page authority from Warrior forum is about 40/100.
  5. Quality backlinks does not equal to high PR backlinks. You need to get links on a page that is useful for it's visitors.
And very last, building backlinks to your long tail keywords posts will increase your domain authority. there is no such thing as over optimizing your website. It all depends on how good your content is and how useful your backlink's page is.

Horrible advice. Tables are redundant. We are in 2012 dude. Link exchange is beneficial?? Just because you may have experience an increase in rankings through link exchange does not mean they are beneficial. Link exchanges are outside of the Google webmaster guidelines which only recommends NATURAL links. If you had one or two I don't think it would be a problem. If you have 50+ link exchanges on a small website it will look incredibly spammy.
