Is it safe to add tier 1 sites to webmaster tools?

Suppose we do some tiered link building.
Now I want to see the inbound links for my tier 1 sites.
Should I add them all as well to my webmaster tools? Or would google assume that if all these tiers and the money site belong to one person, which may seem the links look unnatural. Then they would eventually penalize me?
Or is it safe to add just all the sites that I have, even they are shit sites (thank God they aren't really shit though). :p

Okay. So you hear Google going around sending "unnatural links" warnings to everyone and you're considering adding them all to the same account on GoogleWT? Doesn't sound like a very smart thing to do.

The trick when building links is to leave as little a footprint as possible so google doesn't see you trying to game the system. Telling google all the sites you've built, who's sole purpose is to promote one money site kind of defeats this.

Why do you need to add backlinks to Webmaster Tools in the first place?

There's no good reason to use Google Webmaster Tools. It provides no benefit.

A safe way to do it is to subscribe for services like majestic seo and check backlinks of all your tier 1 links, plus you can find out much more like what are your top competitors backlinks and what are they doing to get where they are. Their cheapest plan is $50 I think and 1 month subscription is more than enough for your purposes.

The reason is to see all the tier 2 backlinks. There are many tools to do this, but they all have their advantages.
Some weak backlinks might get deindexed, or discounted, and it's important to see what does the google actually count. Though the webmaster tools are late to report links, they appear to be quite accurate.
My assumption is that the other tools might not give as accurate picture as the webmaster tools, if it comes to weaker links. Then again other tools don't have as powerful crawling resources as google. Ahrefs seems to be very powerful in that respect, but their report shows only 5 referring domains for me, as I can't afford the subscription.
