  • Seorules,

In general it is better to have links to your site that are complimentary or in some way make sense in their purpose. For instance a link from a car sales website to a mechanic’s website would make sense. A link from a financial services website to an SEO forum probably would be kind of weird. That being said, its not like if you have one or a few links that are out of context you would get penalized but in general, the link profile needs to be natural looking.

I would be careful not to leave a footprint doing what you are doing. I think if you did a moderate amount it would be ok but if, for example, you only have 500 backlinks to your site that are a mixture of no and do-follow, .coms and .orgs, etc and all of a sudden there is a spike in .edu links that have no relevance, you will draw unwanted attention to yourself.

There is some good information here,

I don't know why so many people go gaga over "not in the same niche" BS.

It makes no sense. Just because the best of the best may be niche related,
in context links, does not mean they hurt.

People just fall over that myth.

However, blog commenting in general is so low level, I'd spend my
      time doing something else.

Here's a newsflash: Nobody with a real .edu page, is going to
      add your link anyway.

The .edu link sellers are just BSing people.

I wish the edu myth would die, but sadly, duping people is very
      common among link sellers.

I dont know. I did a paid service where they linked me to all kinds of EDU forum posts and honestly the main pages of the sites had good rank but I do not think I got a single backlink from it because they were irrelevant. Shame really. Wish I could have somehow tied that in

Remember, page PR does NOT equal domain PR. A link on a PR N/A page from a PR5 domain is not a PR5 link.

Also, I do plenty of backlinking on non-niche related sites without any issues. As with anything, variety is good. Links from niche related sites, links from non-niche related sites, dofollow links, nofollow links, links from places with PR, links from places without PR, anchor text variation, etc.

Why are you wasting time chasing down EDU links? They carry no special ranking power. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either clueless or one of the thieves around here selling them. They steal people's money as they blatantly lie to people about how great these links are.

Exactly. In fact, avoid .EDU and .GOV backlinks like the plague. If you want to draw attention to yourself from Google's webspam team, get some irrelevant links from these domains and see what happens.

    i've done tests.

    tons.

an edu link is more powerful if you have some context that uses your keywords around your link.

Just a link alone doesn't help as much.

For an even bigger boost, get a blogger to use your keywords and write a post linking to that EDU page...

you'll make Google think that EDU is about your industry

Diversifying your backlink profile is always good. And when you are building links from high PR sites, you are getting the authority which come alongside with that website. And the domain extension does not matter that much. For example -

If you get a good backlink from Wikipedia.org, that is more valuable and powerful than a .EDU blog comment links.

In the backlink building does not always use niche-related, because it's basically all good backlinks if done by continuously in order to get effective results.

If by high PR .edu profile links you mean irrelevant PRn/a - PR0 links, go for it. Get a bunch of them...

No SEO value & zero direct niche traffic is all the rage these days.
