Hey guys,

We have started a new web development and bought multiple domains a total of 8, 1 being the main brand others related to the niche. We had planned to use the other 7 as squeeze pages redirecting to the main site. Is this effective. Our current web developer is suggesting only using 3. Another colleague says that we bought the domains we might as well put them to use and it wont hurt, we actually will benefit from the back links?

Your thoughts please?

Thank you!

Update: I have heard that if these are all on the same hosting , it makes no difference. So dont count toward backlinks . So you cant link them to main site if they are on same server? what are your thoughts on this? Google crawls servers its not just domain based? Thanks!!

Pretty much what I want to know too. Delveloper has asked me to buy a few extra domains and point just two or three to the site. Keeping the others to stop anyone else buying them.

Not sure how I should do this. Can point them to the same server and add the new domains tot he same site so that foo.org/bar and foo.com/bar are pulling the same content. I can have foo.org/bar 301 redirect to foo.com/bar with the redirect hosted on my server or I can have a redirect hosted by my domain registrar.

My instincts are that unless the new domains are linked to from somewhere then it's not going to make any difference. Using them as squeeze pages might have an effect but it's spammy so quite possibly a negative effect especially if hosted on our main server.

It's salaried work so I've no pecuniary interest in whether it works or not but nonetheless I like to do a good job.
