Which hosting company is best?

I have had a lot of problems with current host who shuts down my sites without prior notice. This has happened the third time in a year so cannot afford to use them anymore. Please recommend which hosting company you have had positive experience with.

    You usually can’t go wrong with any of the main providers (i.e. godaddy, hostgator, hostway, network solutions, or maybe nexcess.net). Why were they shutting your site down? You should note that no matter which host you go with, they may shut your site down if you are exceeding bandwidth or doing anything illegal.

  • there must be some cause .. .have you asked them why they shut it . they will surely tell it
  • The problem is with just one hosting company. Moved the site from one hosting company to another and they kept shutting the sites down without prior notice. The first time it was a rogue search engine spider stuck in a loop which they only discovered after I made a lot of noise. The other two times it was some template issues but these sites were running on the other host for more than 5 years without any issue so I'm convinced that this is a problem specific to this big name hosting company which has become greedy after its acquisition.

    • So, if after 5 years you had no problems, why did you move? To save a few bucks? I'm pretty sure I know where you're hosted at & can tell you that typically "unlimited" web hosts, yes, all of them, tend to jam pack their servers. Your sites are most likely attempting to use the resources you're being sold on that are far limited than what's advertised. Since there's never any room for resource spikes, the first person to hit their cap gets shut off.

      I have spent hours upon hours working with some Warriors here going through logs and top reports from their old hosts only to find that their "high usage" is actually not that high UNLESS there's no head room. Ask your current web host for the ps aux & top outputs.

      Then, I'd recommend either moving back to your old web host that had no problems or finding a new one that specifically limits the loads on their servers.
  • There is no best hosting company. Use redundant hosting. Host your site on 2 hosts at once, and switch from one to the other when one host is down.
  • KingFish, am happy with my first host godaddy. Even though a lot of people bitch about them, the only problem I have with them are the occasional downtime which everyone experiences with them and lack of live chat otherwise they are great. I opted for a second host for redundancy sake as I learned not to put all eggs in one basket from my CIO years. This host gets recommended a lot on every forum so I went with them but the last few months they have been testing my patience and with this last drop I wised up.
  • I like Hostgator. Even when I make a mistake the guys on the help desk are really patient with me. You can get to speak to a real person within a few minutes 24 hours per day.

    Don't use them for auto blogs though. I made that mistake and it cost me a lot of money.

    • I disagree. I found them to be clueless, and moved away pretty fast. Although, I must admit, my experience with that business dates back about a year.

  • There has to be a reason they are shutting down your site.

    Remember although the companies say their hosting is unlimited - there are limits in place with each company. I prefer Hostgator but when you read their terms of service you will see that there are limits in place.

    Hostgator have very good support - 24/7/365.
  • Hi, Hostgator is excellent, or even more secure and redundant is 1and1 dual hosting
    this means your data or websites are on one main server and backed up on another server, if main server goes down it automatically switches to the backup server with no delay, like a mirror image. No downtime..
  • So many disputes in choosing hosting company. Go for 000webhost. No need to pay any money.

  • I've had excellent results with BlueHost for my own several sites and WordPress blogs, as well as for many of my Design/Development/Marketing client's sites.

    I've also experienced a previous excellent site go bad after it was acquired by another company.

    As far as "guaranteed uptime", Keep in mind that when a site advertises 99.99% uptime, that leaves 0.01% of a year, which is still over 3.5 days of downtime.

  • I´ve been with site5 and hostgator for years. Cheap, no problem for years, good support and the uptime is almost 100%. Highly recommended. Good luck.
  • shutting down website is annoying. Contact to host admin for respective cause.
    I prefer Godaddy and Bigrock for hosting but charges are comparatively high.

    • Hi Julia Russo, are you referring to my post? My understanding is that dual hosting is
      2 servers are linked together or synced together so a mirror copy is made. So one server could be in USA and another in UK, so safe from hard drive crash or Data Center Disaster.... Any network or server admin want to correct me if I am wrong?

  • I have been shut down by some of the big providers including Hostgator and Bluehost. Believe it or not this is a good thing because it means they monitor server loads and take action.

    The primary reason you probably got suspended was because spambots were hammering your sites degrading all the other users performances.

    The way I fixed this issue was to look at the visitor logs and then ban all the IP addresses that were consuming the most bandwidth. You'll probably find a lot of bot traffic from China, The Russian Federation, Ukraine and India.

    I also installed a free Wordpress Plugin called Wordpress Firewall 2.
  • Rackspace and amazon are the best. However I have a feeling that they are overkill for the project that you are working on and you could not justify the expense. With more info people could tailor a better response for your inquiries.
  • My favourite one is HostGator (never had problems with it). Yeah, it is professional and it could look expensive for some people, but if you want something PERFECT, you should choose Hostgator

  • Been with Hostgator for 3 years now. At the beginning I new nothing about server loads and some issues...support was good with helping me understand this. Never had a problem in the last 2+ years. They've go my vote.

    STAY AWAY from Host The Name!!!

    • This post is over 3 years old - I'd suggest doing some better research on those recommendations as well.
