    1) Google WebMaster Tools
    2) SEO Power Suite
    3) Serpfox
    4) SEO Quake
    5) AWStats
    6) Scrapebox
    7) The Best Spinner
    8) Dragon Naturally Speaking
    9) Fiver
    10) WP Yoast

Those are my 10 main "SEO" tools.
I can't really think of any other tools I would want/need. I've considered getting something like magic submitter but I'm not sure I understand enough about SEO at this point. Its easy to use scrapebox the right way or thebestspinner, but some of these larger SEO tools frighten me. I would likely destroy all my sites if I made an investment like that. Plus the best "tools" aren't really tools at all, but strategies/testing and finding new & better ways to outsource.

+1 for SEO PowerSuite, it helps to improve all on-page and off-page aspects and is definitely the number one for rank tracking and checking a backlink profile of any site. I personally stick to the desktop tool, because there are no limits to a number of keywords to track and projects to create in SEO PowerSuite and you can also check rankings and run SEO reports as often as needed.

Phew, I have tried several of the local machine rank checkers because of the unlimited keywords, but they keep locking up Google, throwing up CAPTCHAs, and failing. The first time I ran SEO Powersuite it got ranking for almost all keywords in a couple hours. It has never finished a run since that first time. Now it gets a couple words and finishes ... ?. I tried the (free) proxy bank and it got up to 19% in 8 hours and seemed to freeze. I have only 27 words.

SerpFox on the other hand seems to have no trouble at all getting rankings, but it's online and costs $24 for only 200 words.

As SEO PowerSuite is a desktop tool, it uses multiple data centers to collect data from, as well as it loads numerous backlink/keyword factors at a time, and that’s why a check could take a while. That’s how software of its kind works and this is not something unpredictable and surprising.

By the way, same here, I had tried several desktop tools before, but these applications were crashing or extremely slow and that’s why I wouldn't recommend them here. And finally I came to use SEO PowerSuite, which seemed to solve all my problems, so I am sorry to hear it didn’t work that well for you. You may try to change Search Safety Settings in SEO PowerSuite, this should speed the software up..

Thanks, but can someone shed some light on the Google lockout? After the 7 hour run of SEO PS, I waited for about a half hour before starting AWR. The first 5 keywords said "503 service unavailable." Since I have both AWR and SEOPS dialed way up in delay time, the first 5 words in AWR probably took 3 or 4 hours. So, how does the lockout work, I'd like to understand it?

You know, Long Tail Pro had the default of 2 seconds, which was waaaaaaay too short. I had to set it at 30 seconds between queries to not get CAPTCHAs. At 25 seconds it gave me CAPTCHAs. Long Tail Pro took about 4 - 5 hours for 27 words going 500 deep, but LTP would frequently freeze (from what appeared to be a memory leak) and I would have to start it over again (Boooo!).

The first time I ran SEOPS (with out of the box settings) it worked fine. Now it won't seem to even get one keyword from Google.

So, does Google recognize SEOPS and say "no soup for you!"

I thought the local apps with unlimited keywords were the most appealing, but they are starting to looks unusable if one keyword takes one hour and it may or may not get locked out, meaning a wasted hour.

What about using HMA VPN Pro and set the IP to change every minute, would something like that work? Anybody try? But if I'm going to pay for a proxy bank I might as well just pay SerpFox to do it all.

edit: I forgot to mention that I checked your help links. I had everything set as recommended, or higher, except the number of threads. I can bump that down from 5 to 1, maybe, and see if I can pull any data that way with SEOPS. But AWR has been running for 15 hours and is still running with 9 more hours to go.

      Warfornev,

Google blocks an IP for up to 2 hours. The reason for that is unusual traffic from that IP: more specifically, excessively frequent queries or simultaneous queries.

First you get a warning - a CAPTCHA. If you fail to enter it correctly, you get banned. If you click through search results pages really fast (1 click per second) and for a certain period of time - you're likely to get a CAPTCHA.

Same if you use an application that sends requests to Google without pauses or with very short pauses.

How do you end up sending simultaneous queries? Well, say you're googling something in your browser, while an application is sending queries to Google in the background; or perhaps you have 2 applications (e.g., an application from SEO PowerSuite and AWR) monitoring Google rankings at the same time - here you go, you're sending multiple simultaneous queries to Google and will soon get a CAPTCHA.

With SEO PowerSuite you can access search engines directly or via proxies.

If you are accessing search engines directly, then the number of threads should be equal to that of search engines being monitored.

Say, if you are monitoring only Google.com, then you should set the number of threads (simultaneous tasks) to 1. If you set it to 2, you'll be sending 2 requests at a time to Google and it will first throw a CAPTCHA at you and then block you. So keep your number of threads equal to that of preferred search engines and use Human Emulation delays (make them longer if you notice that the default values are not enough).

As I've already mentioned, you can also distribute your simultaneous search queries (threads) among several proxies.

If you go to Preferences > Search Safety Settings > Proxy Rotation, you can either press 'Import' and specify your private proxies addresses and passwords, or you can press "Search" to let the application find some free public proxies for you.

After you've populated your list with some free proxies, you can choose proxies from a specific country and uncheck those coming from other countries. You can also uncheck proxies that are marked red (it means they are slow) or the ones that are "Dead" (see their status).

If you uncheck the option "Use direct connection if no proxies are available", then the application will only send queries through proxies, and never use your actual IP (it will not get blocked).

If you check the option "Look for new proxies when there are no alive proxies on the list", then the software will find new proxies when all of the proxies on the list are dead (unresponsive) or blocked by search engines.

When you feel that the proxies on your list are not very productive, you can select them all and press the "Check" button, then remove those that have the "Dead" status.

Note that the number of threads you set should not exceed the number of proxies in the Proxy Rotation list, otherwise some of the proxies will be sending simultaneous queries and will eventually get temporarily blocked.

When using Proxy Rotation there is one feature you must make sure you've switched off: the rotation of search engines' data centers. You can find it if you go to Preferences > Search Safety Settings. The two Rotations don't work well together.

You can also reduce the number of queries that Rank Tracker sends to Google by applying various Rank Checking Methods in a more flexible way.

You can find these settings under Preferences > Rank Checking Mode. When you're checking keywords' rankings for the very first time, you can choose the "100 Results Per Page" method with the "Refine results in the "10 Results Per Page" search" option unchecked. For all the subsequent checks you can use the "Last Found Position" method.

      Hope this helps!
