SEO can no longer be "gamed". Discussion inside...

I posit the theory that SEO is no longer (or at least, trending very quickly to steer away from) a game-able system.

Think about it for a second. It used to be placing a few links in nice places, using a bot to rewrite a few articles for you, and spamming a few key words would get you ranked fairly decently.

Now, don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that doesn't help your rank at all anymore. And I'm not saying certain techniques still don't work (link wheels, etc). But, the places for links, the quality of the articles, the way you use keywords - it's all changed... and for the better.

Links need to come from quality rather than quantity. Articles need to be on topic and well written. You can't just use certain words over and over. Search engines are getting smarter and smarter, and it's actually a good thing for everyone. We're all making better content to drive clicks, purchases, etc. This better content is actually what everyone wants anyway, so it's no longer really gaming the system. If everyone is putting quality content, if the quantity of inbound links means nothing over a few good quality inbound links , and if instead of spamming things we are delivering great content then everyone wins.

The evolution of SEO has trended to people producing what people want instead of folks getting tricked into clicking things they don't want. And that's a good thing.

So here's my question to everyone - do you like that change? Do you think it's beneficial to what a lot of us do?

I personally like it. I think it's a great trend, and the more quality out there the happier I am, even if it means I have to work harder to get my clients ranked higher.

Yes, you can't game SEO anymore. I was a victim of Google Panda & Penguin update because I was trying to game the system with high PR backlinks.

    That being said...

I think Google and other search engine are still looking for ways to rank the sites. They'll take into consideration other factors such as social media, etc.

The results are not as consistent as before but we'll have to see if they can come up with better algorithm to serve their users better.

Absolutely. Social media actually helps businesses get more involved with customers, and helps prove the legitimacy of links by seeing if actual people are distributing certain URLs.

I'm excited to watch the trend grow to better content, more relevant links, and better search results.

AS long as backlinks count, it can be "gamed" so to speak. You just have to be smart about it. I always tell my clients that building their brand is the smart way to go for the future of SEO.

It can still be gamed hugely by spamming in the right way, I made a thread about it a few days ago. The gaming just doesn't last forever but with rinse & repeat you can make it last forever.

Anyway, not with crappy article directories, blog comments and profile links though, those times are really gone.

I mean from the point they hit top ranking to the point where they... burn? Probably varies by niche and keywords I know. I was roflmao earlier following the trail of these dang russians. they hacked discoveryeducation and reuters. they are bursting at the seams with cheap viagra and payday spam.

      Actually my message is:

You don't want churn & burn so "buy my service" for long lasting rankings.

All the regular spam doesn't work so "buy my service" so you DO rank.

Honestly no idea how long it lasts, I have all my information from sites that I saw ranking based on those Sape/forum post spam and people that I talked to, I never actually tried these practices myself.

Yeah I did try SAPE in the past several times but just to rank normal keywords with a handful or a dozen of links. Those rankings did last till I was out of credit, but it took me like 2 hours to find 10 decent links so I was tired of it right from the start.

I would have to completely disagree. right now in the uk sitting at number 4 for payday loans is a website that is 7 days old. it was at number 6 yesterday and this website is actually a straight redirect to the site it is an affiliate of.

Im sure I dont have to tell you how competitive these keywords are. Sure it wont last but the system has been well and truly gamed in this instance. the website in question is paydaybunny.co.uk/

      Funny example indeed:

      - Ahrefs shows nothing
      - Opensiteexplorer shows nothing
      - Majestic shows 0 stats but look at the Citation/Trust flow graph here:

Site Explorer Results - Summary - Majestic SEO

That's one beast of a spam site pointed at it, oh wait have to put www. in front of it.

Looks like his back link profile mainly consists of dofollow track backs at PR n/a pages and then tiered up with forum posts.

Not to mention 93,000 crappy blog comments pointing to paydaybunny.co.uk (similar results omitted) spam overkill, spamtastic!

@niko I'm just messing with you I like your style :p

I only asked because I'm currently at #2 for one of my sites on ALL the keywords and site #1 gets it's links from hacked sites. He popped out of nowhere a month and a half ago and it's driving me nuts. I've been comfy in the top spot for 3 years, nothing close enough to spit at but this guy ughhhhhh I'm just plugging away, waiting for Google to drop kick him but man it's irritating. Total crap spam links from hacked sites and he is outranking my 9yo authority site. Unbelievable.

Yeah that can be quite disturbing indeed. 1.5 month is pretty long, probably you're dealing with a decent spammer who really knows what he's doing.

Perhaps you have to help him a bit by buying a couple of 100.000 forum profile links at Fiverr. Perhaps Julia can help you

Maybe the Google grace period has something to do with this too?

as long as googlebot is the deciding factor, unless google wants to manually review everything, seo can always be gamed.

Much hasn't changed about SEO, people who assume that are people whom have never known much about it and will probably not.

My friend, SEO has become technical; it is no more a cup of tea for everyone with little knowledge about search engines working. Links quality as well as variety both contribute in seo results. Conversion ratio is also going to be the major contributing factor.
