Google Link Data Confusion

Hi,
Anyone used the "link:www.domainname.com" in google to find out which sites are linking to yours? If so, does it work for you?
I have tried it for my site and it returns only 1 link and yet I know there are over fifty out there which have been out for a long time and have been crawled by Google.
In fact, if I go to Google sitemaps there are two conflicting reports. The stats say there is only 1 link to the site but then looking at the external links section it states there are 26 links to the site. Drilling down into the list of these linking sites I can confirm these are correct, although not complete. ie. there's at least 50.
I'm getting really confused with this, especially as Google sitemaps seems to contradict itself.
Anyoe clued up on this that can explain what's going on?
