Should you stop doing SEO after hitting #1?

Hey there,

Thanks in advance for reading this post,

Last year, about 9 months ago, I started a site for a niche market, and did SEO for a few months, after the EDM update, I stopped doing SEO because I thought it was no use, the domain was the same as the KWs. I didn't check the site till earlier this month, and much to my surprise it was #1 for the niche market keywords.

A week ago I started doing SEO for said site again, and it has dropped to the 2nd spot on the serp.

Was just wondering if this is from the google dance or if I accidentally added crap BLs?

Thanks!
#hitting #seo #stop

Did you "accidentally" buy a fivver gig? How do you forget whether or not you built crappy BLs? That's kind of important info to be able to answer this question.

      LOL, no I didn't.
I had BLs on sites like 4seohunt.com which is a PR5, but you get a lot of links from a site like that when other people submit urls, you end up on their BLs as well.

That is a good point. People get attracted with the backlink offers (while they are 90% spammy) provided at fiverr and they have a try. Instead of having a good results, they have a SHOCK

It's definitely because you stopped working on SEO. The result of SEO works will not show immediately. So don't stop your SEO works cause your competitors surely not.

How come you didn't check your site for months? Didn't you have it monetized? Didn't you see money coming in from it?

I had another site selling the same product using a different KW, I thought the sales were coming from that site which is ranking 5th.

It's hard to know what's going on if you're not paying attention hehehe Anyways... Moving forward: good links, no more breaks and maybe sticky notes?

Once you hit Rank #1, it very important to maintain the same for a long time other if you stop doing that you will loose the positions one by one, so ensure that activities are done on regular basis to maintain the traffic as well as ranking positions

It's not necessary that you stop building links. If you're already at #1, try to get links from high Quality sites. Invest your time in doing some research where you might get link from a really good site.

Nope, never make this mistake, instead of stopping, you need to concentrate more when you hit #1 rank for a keyword as now all are your competitors and they would be doing their best to pull you down. SEO is like a never ending race and you can not rest because once you stop for resting, others will outrank you.

A drop from #1 to #2 is not a Google dance or a result of lousy backlinks. It is just a normal fluctuation. Most of your competitors are not going to just sit back and do nothing.

      Yes, I agree.
This happens all the time. Rankings fluctuate everyday. The ups and downs are always happening.

Link velocity is just as important as link link variety.

I dunno Mike he was still at #1 after taking months off! Obviously his competition is asleep at the wheel. I mean it could just be a little ripple but seems fishy. Plus are you reading this? He doesn't even remember it's all kind of hazy, or smokey hehehe

To the OP, you may have also just lost 1 or 2 good links. That would drop you back a spot or several spots depending on the keyword.

I would use game theory to relate to an idea like this.

You are in the #1 spot, so you are essentially that lion who stands on top of the food chain. You are that lion who just ate one massive feast of baby gazelle and boy are you satisfied. Your tummy is full, you become relaxed from the nutritious protiens that begin to saturate the blood in your brain making your body lethargic and tired.

So you decide to go lay down in the shade by a tree. You think "I'm the #1 lion, I am the shit, and I am entitled to a good nap after a feast such as this".

Your eyes slowly twitch untill you drift off into a dream of you banging other female lions while simultaneously eating their young. You are in "lion heaven".

Then... as you lie asleep, with a cool summer breeze sweeping past your mane, a gang of angry hyhenas claws your body into pieces and eats you alive. You wake up briefly for a second, to realize you are not 1 lion, but 100 individual pieces of what use to be 1 lion.

Afterwards when the hyhenas are done, a flock of vultures comes by to lick the blood of your bones.

So now, ask yourself, what do YOU think a person should do when they hit page 1 of google?

Once you hit #1, I would focus on creating more content rather than links.

More content can also help rankings if it is on the same website and related to the same topic.

Also, more content would help branch out to get more keywords and longtail keywords.

If you hit #1, then you have to work more to maintain the ranking, you have to do both, content creation and link building because your competitors are trying to overcome you..

It totally depends on your current link profile and the link profiles of your competition.

Did SEO diligently for my site below (see ciggie) and managed to get it to page 1. Then i got lazy and stopped ... dropped right back to page 7.... so no, you shouldn't stop doing SEO after hitting page 1

No, definitely not. When you were working hard enough in order to reach the #1 spot, you should've worked even harder to maintain that spot. Competition in rankings is fierce, and every minute there are thousands who are trying to get your spot. It's alright that you took a break, but you shouldn't have done so for quite some time, and you should've monitored your site ranking, you know, sleeping with one eye open? Because basically, if you're already on top, there's nowhere else to go but down.
