Question about AdSense

Hi, I don’t know much about AdSense but was reading up a little about it now. Was reading something that says:

“Make sure that the topic of your article matches the topic of your site, and the topic of the ads that are being displayed through your Google Adsense ads. This will get you the best results.”

What if you own a general site that discusses everything. Does that mean ads that appear on your site will not be relevant to the text (if your site is general)? Or does Google match ads to only the text on the said page?

Was also reading that when you apply for AdSense you must describe what the site niche is about. Guessing this helps determine which ads are placed on your site. Again, my site is general, so could this cause me not to be accepted or irrelevant placement of ads?

    It means you'll probably end up with a very low CTR on the Adsense Ads.

    Google tracks the pages traffic (browser cookies), so for example here's a traffic flow:

    (Internal pages subject/title):
    • Car insurance rates
    • 10 best swimming pool liners
    • Why do women buy so many shoes?
    • NASA launches new satellite
    • Teach dogs to stop barking

    Now say this single unique traffic is searching for swimming pool info on Google, the traffic lands on your 10 best swimming pool liners page. Google starts tracking the page subject (swimming pools), the traffic goes to the next page on your site NASA launches new satellite, traffic might see an Adsense Ad for swimming pools (what the traffic was originally interested in) but it's less likely.

    The more you keep changing the subject, the less focused the cookie data is that Google tracks.

    If that same unique traffic viewed 6 internal pages all focused on swimming pools they're more likely to see Ads related to swimming pools on all those pages including the 7th+ page they visit about swimming pools.

    Nothings guaranteed but it's easier to increase CTR on a site that's focused on a single niche.

  • I see what you mean, you'd think Google would give you the option to choose the topic of the ad to appear on your site. That option I think would work better for me.

    I wonder if ezinearticles make good money with AdSense. That would be a similar niche to mine... just not near the amount of visitors.

      If Google did that, every single site running Adsense would be running mesothelioma lawsuit Ads ($$).
  • Everyone teaches, drive down and pick the sub niche, never do they say pick the top most key word. The most general key words have more information seekers and less serious buyer types. Which is not where the money lies.
