In today's SEO madness and with all the constant changes in the algorithm, how hard is it to rank for a low comp keyword?
I'm not looking to go after the big boys and target a high comp keyword, i just want to build a website around a low comp keyword i have found.

Any input or experience in this would be much appreciated

It really easy to target the low competitive keywords by including them in the content of the website along with high competitive keywords. At the same time, start performing offsite activities by including the keywords specially in classifieds, directory and article submission.

It's a piece of cake. Backlinking is often not even required (outside of a few social bookmarks to get indexed). I have TONS of clients doing very well targeting low competition stuff.

There is a total different opinion on low competition and Google Adwords tool makes it even worse as many people during their kw scraping thinks that it indicates low competition for organic results while we know it's about the advertisers in the paid program

The low competition that you're talking about is actually zero competition or dead easy competition.

Most people classify low competition a lot tougher then that, for example: "best hair dryers", or "hair dryer reviews", not in a million years that you rank for such term with a few bookmarks of course.

To the OP: Sometimes it can even be nasty to rank for low competition keywords when the website quality is below all levels or when you only have automated links in combination with a brand new site. Often that just doesn't work.

If you are starting a new blog, then targeting long tail, low competition keywords are the easiest to rank for. Even though its low competition, you will still need to provide lots of quality content. After you have made the post, promote it by social media, a few backlinks and so on.

Build a solid foundation, the reason I say to backlinks is because you want your post to rank high and stay up in the top 6 results, backlinks will give it an urge to stay up.

There's no easy answer to this question.

On the surface, keyword with low competition are easier to rank for, and we generally recommend going after them. In Rank Tracker we mark the "easiest" ones with green KEI flag (large # of searches, low competition):

However, it's not that straightforward. You'll need taking a closer look at the competitors.

Who are the top players in the niche? Have a quick look at their backlink profiles. If they're supported by tons of .edu backlinks, it might not be that easy.

Another point is content. Ask yourself if you'd be able to provide the same level of content as sites that rank highest for your keyword.

Here's an example: you target ranking some specific medical technology, which has low competition. However, top 10 sites are some leading research and health centers with extensive content on the topic. At this point, it won't be that easy.

To sum it up, here are two things to consider beyond the competition volume:
      - competitors' content
      - competitors' backlinks

If you feel you won't be lagging behind, go after your low-competition keyword.

The key thing with low competition keywords is that you don't need to work on "diversification". It's enough to build let's say 15 links from article directories and you will rank.

    Jasonallvall,

It is a relatively easy thing to rank well for a low ranked keyword. The question that I have is why do you want to write content for a keyword that has low traffic?
Sure you get a little ego stroke for "green cats on fire" ranking number one, but unless that is really your target audience, is it worth the time?
How about a keyword a bit more in the middle if you don't want to go for the gold?

I encourage you to step up to the plate and write your best content for the very best keywords for your site. You may just surprise yourself!
Add new content to the page every once in a while and if your'e really serious add your own original graphic at 550px with your keyword alt tagged. Then start building some back links to that page URL.

Depends on your definition of "low comp" of course, but generally pretty easy, and even easier if it's a local business keyword, and your client's website is localized information based.

The low hanging fruit approach is easy and can be profitable, just rinse and repeat because it takes a lot of sites to make good money this way.

Your keyword must have a high search but low competition. These type of keywords will give you visits and leads. Selecting high competition keywords will make you difficult to rank your pages in SERP.

We would recommend to go for tough keywords, since it's not that much of extra work.
