How to better monetize a 30k views site using Adsense?

Hi guys,

Here's an interesting one for you!

I do (reasonably) well with niche sites using Adsense, making roughly €500 per month on them with quite low views. So I am not an absolute newbie to Adsense.

However!!

My main business site, R a p I r e l a n d [dot] com, gets about 30-40k unique views per month. But, the CTR is down at a miserable 0.16%, compared with 15-25% on my niche sites.

Now I understand it's an news/information site, less click through than niches etc.. but 0.16% is still woeful!!

So here's my question, or my challenge... Using new positioning etc, how can I take this site to a reasonable 3-5% CTR, without harming the visuals. That is, I don't want it to look like a spam site, as this is the portal for my offline business.

I'm turning this over to you adsense gurus out there!!

I use would place three Adsense ads on every page. One banner at the top and one banner at the bottom and a skycraper ad at the sidebar. You can view my website for the placements. In my experience turning your ads to Text/Image yields the best results.

Sometimes it doesn't matter what you do mate, it's all about the niche.

Assuming your website is about Rap, as in hip hop here...

The niche that your website is in, sounds like it would appeal to younger people who are just browsing for information, or music in this case (not problem solvers, or buyers). This kind of demographic is somewhat notorious for not clicking on ads, and thus low CTR and EPC rates.

So, all you can really do is test, and hope that it's not just the demographic.

Other than that, think about using different ad models, not adsense. Finding some good private advertisers could work out really well for you, especially with the pretty high traffic you have going there...

Something like this could work well for you: Buy or Sell Your Website & Ads – Trusted Link Advertising – Established Sites for Sale

though, from my experience, these companies usually approach you, and it's harder to try and sell them adspace by approaching them...

    Worth thinking about anyways

I just put one adsense ad on a page, either text links center top or large square mid page right. On about 12 sites I rarely get less than 1% click-thru.

I suspect the text links pay less (music site), I think I'm going to try a text/img banner instead.

BUT music sites usually only .10-.20 a click vs. $3-$10 a click for business sites. That makes a huge difference at least for me.
