Ranked a site on page #4 with zero content and no backlinks...

Hey friends,

I ranked a blog on page #4 of G with zero content. Here's how I did it:

1) I bought the EMD for my keyword (keywordnow.com)

2) One H1 keyword tag and one picture with keyword Alt Text (the picture can be anything you want as Google can't "see" it)

3) Keyword in Meta Title & Description

4) Only one sentence under the picture - "Still under construction. Click here for more information". 'Click here' points to Wikipedia.

5) One keyword category with 3 tags (keyword and variations of keyword).

That's it seriously. No voodoo, no jedi tricks.

Imagine what I can do with a few, tidy backlinks?

I firmly believe that good content is about keeping visitors on your site. It has nothing to do with Google rankings.

So, before you start posting 1000 word articles, give this some thought.

Sanj.

What was the competition like for the keyword? How many words in the keyword? Also how many searches "exact" does the keyword get monthly?

6K exact global searches and 250K 'competing' pages (if you call it competition). I know the purists will argue that your competition is the top #10 so I'll leave that up to you.

I'm not saying this technique will get you to number #1. That takes a bit more work and some smarter thinking. What I am saying is that you don't need complicated/abstract link building. In my experience the competition isn't as hard as you might think it would be with the right keyword research.

Lol, I accidentally overwrote my WP installation one time and lost all my content, it was an EMD as well that was slightly over optimized, there was content though and I had already build a few links and was ranking at #7.

However after my mistake and an empty WP installation my keyword moved up to #3

    You got to love Panda

Funny enough it is now ranking at #1 for the EMD, just checked it a minute ago, hardly competition though but the site is still an empty WP.

No competiton, how about a PR6 inner page from a .gov.uk site with the exact keyphrase in their title and in their meta description and in their H1 tags, damn. Another reason why you should never stare blind at kw in title, url, h1 tag or whatever. Although this is quite exceptional as the PR6 gov page is about something totally different then the kw, it's about passports and other legal issue's, and has not a single anchor txt that slightly relates to the page title etc. In fact it's a FAQ kind of page! But the perfect example why back links with relevant anchor txt's are so insane important, it makes or breaks the rankings of your site.

So, we need to remove all the content from our website to rank first on google. Then, we can put up an advertisement link with nofollow/noindex tag to bank a lot of money.

        Splended idea yes

Well it's at least a good test to see if there are any Panda issue's when you remove the whole bunch and when you start to rank better for your main kw without content then you know you're doing something wrong.

          Why don't you try it?

It's not really a trick. It's about minimizing the work load. I managed to rank on page #4 with zero work. Seriously, it took me like 15 minutes to build the site.

My point is, do the basics first and get your site indexed/ranked. Once it's ranked, add relevant content and start backlinking. By relevant I don't mean add 1000 word posts. I have sites ranking with 1 YouTube video, couple of sentences and 1 affiliate link. That's it. My high PR backlink strategy takes care of the rest.

I've seen so many marketers build sites with 1000s of words and it fails to index or rank. Rank first then 'build' the site. It's much simpler and kinder to your sanity!

I'd like to give an award consideration for silliest thread in the last 6 months that I have seen.

PAGE 4 ranking? not top 20 not top 10 but on page 4?
NO idea of what keyword? so no proof as to whether this represents any real money making term
2013 and a strategy based on buying EMDs?
States that based on a nameless keywordless anecdotal story that no one can confirm you should consider NOT putting up much content on your site.

I will say this - All you guys on here can make oodles of money because obviously those of you biting on this have found the purest grade of crack cocaine available to man to use.

Here we go. I knew it wouldn't take long for you to post a rant. Seems like that's all you do these days.

A page #4 ranking with zero work, an EMD, post Panda and Penguin, and no backlinks - I thought that would help eliminate the myths you read on this forum. If you had bothered to read the thread then you would have seen the keyword stats.

I have stopped building EMD sites in 2013 but I thought I would to counteract the crap you hear about Google "punishing" EMDs. That is nonsense and I have sites ranked page #1 and most are EMDs (pre and post Google updates and making money).

I will say that for longevity and if you want to build a legacy (saving you money in the long run) the authority model is definitely the way to go.

The thing is, you can rank an EMD, and the rankings can last, my own site at #1 is an example of that with the empty WP.

        HOWEVER

As soon as you start adding Adsense / Amazon or other affiliate links then Google treats your site completely different and then the EMD update for thin affiliate sites DOES kick in hard.

The proof is in the results, it's along time ago that I saw some crappy EMD site ranking at page 1.

Well actually I do see them still but they often belong to spammers who know what they are doing, and that is not just some SenukeX campaigns but a wide variety of links in massive amounts.

Generally, most EMDs are short term (unless you target a very generic keyword). That's why I have moved onto authority sites. It's easier and much more cost effective in the long run. Plus, you are more immune to Google updates but even so, I haven't seen any of my EMDs slapped by Google. The ones that did were purely for testing where I used spammy linkwheel services on Fiverr and WF.

Read em...didn't matter....Who cares about keyword stats? How does anyone know its a competitive term? You are missing my point. Thousands of searches get done every day few people will monetize. How have you dispelled any myth? With a page 4 "ranking"? Really? You think On page SEO getting you to no higher than page 4 dispells myths? It doesn't even dispel the EMD myth since I have never seen anyone claim EMDs even that fell had to fall beyond page 4.

Meanwhile presenting what you did in the OP you promote another set myths so I must ask again

Do a search on WF for EMDs slapped post Penguin/Panda. The hysteria took over for a few days (like it does every Google update).

UPDATE - My keyword is now ranked #3 in Google. After the initial page #4 indexing, the site is doing well with ~100 unique visitors/day and making money. All it took was another 250 word post (just pros/cons about the product), a YouTube video, 1 PR7 backlinklink that took 2 minutes to arrange, and some PR3s/PR4s from a private blog network.

I would say the entire process took less than 2 hours.

EMD is still very powful on low competitive niche.

one of my sites slowgif.com rank #1 with keyword slow gif.

but it get very little traffic every day, about 8-10 visitor per day from google.

what ever, it takes you only $10 to buy one domain name, still worthwhile.

This is exactly my point (seems to be lost in all the waffle). Start off with a skeleton site, get index/ranked then "build" your site. It's much easier these days. I see so many strategies that say you need to build 10 articles/day, guest post on PR3+ sites, backlink constantly for a month to build a link profile etc etc.

To reiterate the point, my site is ranked on page #4. I can easily get that to page #1 (top 3) with a YouTube video and some private blog backlinks. FYI, rank #1 might take a little more work because it's a PR5 authority site.

This is a pointless thread. Anyone with half a brain would know that emd's are not gong to be punished by google. If that was the case sites such as Nike.com and even google itself would be punished for using their own brand name. It's clear emd's do not carry the sae power but anyone that thought they would be punished is an idiot

Congrats smodha, it sounds like you've got some easy cash flow going.

Emd's are quite powerful still if you know what you're doing.

You best start adding that content and SEO though, before them seo spies catches on and take you out.

    Best of luck

People will never learn. EMDs are not powerful. They are as risky as can be if you try and put stock in them as having some great SEO power. One question

When has Google EVER made a change to the algo that they did not follow up with more changes? Why in the world would anybody think the emd update is going to buck the trend and be a one shot deal?

For goodness sake stop fooling the newbies (one poor guy in this thread already ran out and bought an EMD). This madness of trying to clutch to old dying strategies is just hurting people. This is the real reason as the Op states I go into "rants". I wouldn't care less if you guys didn't peddle this stuff to others. I'd say believe what you want - maybe find your keywords and outrank you since I know its easy pickings.

So some EMDs still rank (never was a penalty as much as taking away their strength)? What happens when there is another EMD update tweak? (could be any day now). Its like looking at Panda ignoring what Panda or Penguin is trying to do and pretending it won't continue because your site survived the last update but shouldn't have.

Good night You know how many people I know that lost 75% of their income or more relying on EMDs many of whom had to scramble for offline jobs to keep the light on? and now a few months pass by and people are trying to repackage it and resell it as a good strategy.

EMD's are more an indication of low competition than anything else. I don't think you get much of a boost these days with EMDs as you did last year. So on this, I agree with Michael.

This is a solid method; i used it to get on page 1 and page 2 on 3 or 4 EMD blogs i created... i think I will use this strategy a couple times a week to throw mud at the wall and see what sticks... the sites that rank pretty well, i will develop further; those that don't, will try a little backlink love and see what happens...

Just read the posts that you rank at #3 now and arranged a PR7 link in 2 minutes, could you perhaps teach me how you do that?

A very interesting technique. After reading this thread, I became sure that there are still a lot of thing about Google which we are yet to know. Everyone explains SEO in their own way. Personally I also thought good contents plays the biggest role to get ranking.

Still I think good content is the key but there are something about Google ranking which is still unexplained. That kind of thing may have taken place in that content less site.

    "High quality Content"

People don't get that not the Content lets you rank but rather the consequences of good content which means:

Other sites naturally link your sites
    Less Bounce rate
    etc.

There is no one sitting in the google office reading countless blogs and evaluating the content.
