Final Got The URL I wanted, If I switch will I lose Ranking

Question for anyone that might have experienced this.
I run a news site and have over 2,000 news pages indexed in Google.

I started the site under one url but now tow years later I have secured a url that is very close but much more effective, much easier to remember and much closer to the topic. Right now because it's such a catchy name I'm just redirecting the new one to the old site.

My questions is if I start using the new domain, do I lose all the content from the first one. Will I be starting from scratch?

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
-Capp

Nope just use 301 redirection to redirect all pages to the new website. That's all.

It's a little more complicated than that. You have to redirect each individual page to the corresponding new page on the new website.

With over 2000 pages, you have some work to do.

I think you have "url" mixed up with "domain,"
as well as whole lot of other things.

But, that would explain why you even came up with such
        an idea.

Will people ever learn? I guess not.

Mike, people hear "301" somewhere, and suddenly they think they
are an expert...if only people really knew what a 301 was designed
        for....

A real person would leave the site intact, create another one,
IF such a thing was actually worth it.

I'm waiting for warriorforum.com to get real and come up with
a better domain....sure doesn't fit internet marketing very well,
        does it?

Setting up the page to page 301 redirect would take a couple of minutes via .htaccess. So it is not hard contrary to an earlier post. Plenty of instructions on how to do this on the internet. Just do a search.

The more time consuming step is transferring the domain and fixing the links on the new domain. There are some fancy tools that can help you do this and for a 2K page website I would strongly recommend using one.

You shouldn't loose your rankings using a 301 redirect.

    Good luck!
