Can you please help me interpret this fall in backlinks?

Please have a look at the attached "backlinks graph".

I try to figure out why there is so much drop the last years and what is this peak and bottom observed on April 2011.

Any ideas what all this means?

In terms of SEO there is a decline on the SERP the last months, did Google do a new update on their algorithm?

Thank you for any help you can give!

They are always doing "minor" adjustments on their algorithm but would only do press releases when its big, I would suggest only back linking to high PR sites and you will do fine.
Social book marking is a big key and believe it or not Pinterest is playing a major factor in SEO rankings lately.

Yeah now social bookmarking is really playing a big part in the seo ranking but the quality is very important too... fakes account and other tricks are easily spotted and the result will be a penalization .. about your results i'm just wondering if you didn't apply for some cheap service with bad backlinks... or if you didn't use some backlinking service with temporary backlinks... and as soon you stop their service they remove your back links...

Actually, this website never played any game with backlinks, it never requested to be linked by another website. The links happen naturally after submitting the new releases on download websites (but these are not new links, just the existing ones).

There is no social backlinking unfortunately.

About the penalization, this would affect the SERP, correct? Not the graph that I show you which shows a decline on the total number of backlinks out there, s this correct?

So, we first need to address to get more value backlinks out there? (How? Which service?)

      Thanks.

  • Websoldier,

There could be many reasons the links dropped off your radar. They could have been on domains that were de-indexed, the webmasters could have removed the links or the page that the link was on. Really anything could have happened.

In the future you should make an attempt to keep track of your backinks (at least the ones you build) in a spreadsheet. Unless you have thousands and thousands of them, this can be feasible. Then you can periodically check if all of them are still there or if ones are missing, which ones they are.

You could also check out a tool like link spyder,

I haven’t used it but it looks pretty cool,
