Put content on the site get it settled and ranking over 3 months maybe more.

For the first 3 months build a facebook page and get fans & friends, get google+ going, youtube, twitter, delicious ........

Create a new article once a week.

    Then backlink after 3-6 months.

    That's an easy one!
The maximum crappy backlinks that a new site should have....0
And the maximum high quality links that you should build for a new site... unlimited.

Get as many good links as you can buy, beg, borrow, steal or barter for. Good links won't hurt your site. Spammy links will. Remember to vary your anchor text, don't get them all in one place and don't swim after eating.

Junk -unreated to your niche and/or creating backlinks with spam spun text pointing back to your site

Good - Related to your niche and high PR , Social media links, bookmarking, follow and no follow.

When you begin putting backlinks on there be consistent. I've seen figures of 10 a day banded about. Whatever you do, don't ever have 5 one day, 20 the next, nothing for 6 days then 40, then 1 and so on. Because that just doesn't seem natural. Good luck.

Whatever you do, don't listen to this guy. What he said is a load of crap. Build as many or as few backlinks as you like. Just make sure that they are high quality.

Explain how a post can go viral, bring a website plenty of backlinks, receive none for the next few weeks, and then still rank? I'll tell you why: link velocity and consistency is bullshit.

Furthermore, what's so natural about building 10 links a day, everyday, for a week? It's a genius idea that SEO sellers came up with to ensure that they have repeat business. There is some truth to it, though. The crappy links most sellers sell will often drop off, so more and more links need to be built. Build high quality links and this won't be an issue.

the thing is to never stop creating backlinks, that's the issue that 99% ignore. sure you'll rank but then your backlinks become
    stale

    your backlinks drop

and you're not building new ones? then you drop in rankings...

as others said i personally believe velocity is a myth so build as many "GOOD" backlinks in a day as you can... it's not like google will find them all in a day anyway.

Build quality backlinks. I've had my site with ~70 backlinks outrank other sites with over 1000. Quality over quantity always.
