Yelp listings out ranking local website for keywords

Does anyone know the rhyme or reason to why yelp pages rank above my local business page? The good thing is that it is my yelp page ranking above my local site, but does anyone know why that yelp page ranks so well??

I have done nothing special to the yelp page, but for some reason it is grabbing the #1 spots for certain keywords (then my site hits number 2-3).

I literally set up the yelp page on day 1 of our business and didn't touch it since. We have 5 reviews (about 10 less than competitors for the same keyword).
The only thing that I could imagine is that yelp pushed more pr juice to it because I put a coupon on it. ($75 for $100)

I am not complaining at all because we get tons of traffic from it, but does anyone know why that yelp page ranks so highly?

Google likes Yelp for local searches. You can see it throughout many local searches. You will often find Yelp on page one and through pages 2 and 3.

Is there any way to outrank them and push Yelp down...to say page 2?

I can see if one has a stellar Yelp page that they would want to have it ranked high, but what if your Yelp page has a 1-2 star average?

That's called reputation management and involves setting up some other social profiles or web2.0's or anything of that kind. Then the next step is to rank those above the Yelp and thus it ends up on page 2.

        Not very cheap though.

Yep, I noticed this too. My competitors yelp ranks right in the middle of page 1, but his 5 bright stars cut right through the page. So I'm sure he's picking up a lot of traffic from it.

I don't know what it is about stars but they always catch my eye really fast. I'm actually thinking about ranking youtube videos with 5 stars as the thumbnail, for multiple different keywords, just to see what happens. If it confuses anyone I'll just link my google places to the videos. Potentially pick up some more keywords too. =]

Just curious, but is that competitor by chance an exact match to the keyword?

Yelp pages are largely ranking on the strength of the domain, but it's usually possible to overtake them with some decent link building. I generally take keywords with Yelp listings on the first page as fairly uncompetitive, so getting your on-page SEO right and building some decent links should to the trick!
