We are not sure why search engines are not telling it themselves. Why hurt sites first and then have them to fix their sites. Search engines can tell ahead of time what the problem can be and just site owners to fix the problems and whoever didn't fix it by certain date will be penalized.

Your post will definitely give people ideas to post something related. I guess by the time I wake up tomorrow, I will see a lot of posts talking about this stuff.

This will be interesting. Google better not decide to hurt my sites. I naturally backlinked all my latest sites with blog comments, guest posts, and some forum posts. Plus I would consider all my content researched well and of good quality.

It would be nice if they could remove some of the spam that is showing up on the first few pages for product review searches. All that junk is a few words about the product, a picture, and link to amazon or some other site.

YOU created those backlinks, so they're not natural. They are artificial.

Do and wish as you say, but it has worked out well for me. Of coarse the BEST form of backlinks come without you doing the work. But if there was a BEST form of backlinking that you could do yourself, than I stated them.

I've watched friends drop from #5 rankings to nearly #100 with link wheels and directory backlinks.

And by the way Mike, I do VERY little blog commenting backlinks. If I am reading on a site about bicycles and my niche is about bikes, than I will maybe leave a comment containing my link.

Thats what every link wheel builder. blog comment blaster, link spammer said before the first Penguin. See you in a whine thread sometime in 2013 when you realize that Google doesn't have the technology to determine quality by an algo the same way a human can but it does know certain kind of links are self placed links - so off with their heads

Mike did you listen to what I said?

I'm not a crazy backlinker. To be honest, I build very little backlinks. One of my sites averages nearly 300 views a day from Google and it has only been open three to four months. I have built about 15 backlinks to this website. It's a PR2. I rank on the first page for many of my keywords (mix of short/long tail keywords).

And I have maybe four relevant blog comment backlinks for the site. I don't use any software to build backlinks.

If I'm slapped, than we're all screwed. That will leave just about zip 0 methods of backlinking left.

One of the reasons that I began only commenting on relevant blogs and not very often. I find backlinking somewhat overrated, that is unless you're trying to rank for a tough keyword. Most of my sites are aimed at long tail keywords, thus there has been no need for tons of backlinks.

A site I opened in Janurary with an EMD is ranked #1 without a single backlink. Hasn't moved at all. Traffic is slowly making its way up to 400 visits per day. All keywords are long tails though.

And I am done with you Mike. I'm telling you what has worked for me. And that is little to no backlinks, with my main focus being long tails.

Dude Thats where you are missing it. You think that because you don't use software that means all is ok. This is the real problem here

Google isn't smart enough to know you made those blog comment, blog post, or forum backlinks yourself.
Google doesn't have to be smart enough they only have to discount the non editorial links which THEY KNOW are the blog comments and forum backlinks.

No we are not all screwed. Not all of us use blog comments and forum links to rank. In fact most sites ranking use none of them.

Yukon/BGVA - Our thoughts on backlinks are different obviously. When you do the backlink work yourself on other quality websites, whether it be a forum, blog post, or comment, than that's what I consider a "good backlink."

But when you start to backlink via a link wheel, link network, or directory, I see those links as something Google would eliminate in the future. Google isn't smart enough to know you made those blog comment, blog post, or forum backlinks yourself. But they are smart enough to see a trend when it comes to link wheels, link networks, and directories.

And when I mentioned spam on the first few pages of Google, I mean sites blogspot, wordpress, yahoo, etc. The content on those pages are crap. It's a sales page that has no unique value to it whatsoever. Basically they copy product descriptions from Amazon. Then they would link back to Amazon with their affiliate link.

Anyways, those are just my thoughts. Shouldn't of called the backlinks 'natural' though. I call all good forms of backlinks natural.

I guess that reconfirms the SAPE links as the current target.

The problem I see with Google going after SAPE links is it's pretty much a moving target If those guys are running churn & burn money sites, as long as they're consistently hacking fresh links. Fresh links + fresh sites = moving target.

For the record, I don't agree/approve of hacking anything.

I think that is why you are seeing this strategy of promoting protecting your site from being hacked to webmasters.

They won't be able to take out large chunks of the network like they did with BMR, SEO LinkMonster (POS), ALN, etc.

So to start with they do some PR around how webmasters can keep from being hacked and get a talking puppet to put out a big article about how Google is targeting Sape. Good way to scare some people out of using it. Next they'll hit some sites really hard that they can confirm are using it. Completely deindex them. That will get more people talking and make some people completely scared to use Sape or anything like it.

It's a more subtle attack than what they did to the public blog networks last year, but it will probably have some impact.

I agree with the Google scare tactics.

The link that FakeItTilYouMakeIt posted above has a link to this page, they talk about viewing the cache & also looking for any code on the theme/html that includes base64. I don't know how old that Google page is, but I've talked about base64 hacks on this forum for over a year now, they're common in free WP theme files from bogus free theme sites, plugins can also include the base64 code. The easiest way to know If a page has been hacked is to look at the Google Cache (text version ) not the full version, the full version doesn't usually show the hacked links. What's messed up about hidden base64 links is, those links don't even show up in the HTML, but they do show up in the Google Cache (text version) where it counts most for the hackers.

Really I wouldn't even call those base64 guys hackers considering the backlinks are built into the WP theme/plugin before they're ever downloaded as a zip file. It's a hack but it's not some guy breaking passwords on an Admin. Maybe they have guys breaking into Admin. accounts (IDK), but I imagine most of those SAPE links are taking the easy route with stuffing the free bogus WP theme/plugins with backlinks (less work, larger link volume).

I also know for a fact that GWT checks the WP version on a blog, I posted that here on WF probably a year ago. I could see a possibility of Google devaluing outdated WP blogs/sites in their algo. A default WP install shows the WP version number in the HTML source code, I removed my WP version number when they sent me a message in GWT.

My take on it is quite different. to me they are basicaly saying - Yes we are going to hold the webmaster responsible and yes its going to hurt innocent webmasters - and this is preemptive not as a scare tactic but as a way of saying - look we told you you should take care of this.

So in other words this is their way of handling the fall out when they move on Sape.

I see no reason whatsoever why they can't take down big chunks. They probably have infiltrated as customers and Google could care less if they have to spend even a couple tens of thousands of dollars to send a message that clearly helps them beyond just Sape

Will Sape be able to go on? Probably..... BMR could have gone on by buying new domains. Will it send a solid blow? undoubtedly. Theres no way they do this kind of press on it if they don't have a clear handle on what they will do and that it will work.

I agree with the churn and burn people picking up and moving on but at least in the cell I found there was a looooong list of links that was injected and the links (while mostly spam) weren't all churn and burn sites, there were some surprising exceptions. Brick and mortar small businesses. Regional franchise service company. Could get interesting. It will be funnier to see the reaction of the hacked sites. Will Google blacklist PBS? Discovery education? Reuters blog?

I'm sure it's more than base64 hacks on WP themes, still I imagine the base64 hacks is a large part of the hacked links, it's dirt simple, find a free theme, base64 the links, create a bogus theme download site, sit back & watch the link numbers increase from all the downloads.

BTW, those base64 links are sometimes hard to find If you've never had to deal with them, the links I've seen only show on the cache text version, not in the HTML source code on the live web page, but the links will still be inside the WP theme.

The hacked themes usually have the base64 split up so one part of the code is calling a 2nd part of the code, If you don't remove all of the base64 code at the same time it can lock up your WP Admin (locked out of your own site Admin.), the only way back in is FTP or Cpanel. Been there, done that, lol.

The easiest way to deal with a hacked base64 WP theme is simply switch back to the default WP theme, then delete the hacked theme. Don't try to make any code edits on the live theme because you'll risk locking up the entire site (headache).

Agree with this - it's way obvious that they're gonna crack down and the naysayers will look silly this time next week. I don't think they'll care, though. The guys selling the links will find something new and the suckers will buy it up. It's like BSG - History will keep repeating ad infinitum.

Supposedly WP powers around +14% of the blogs on the net, the majority of those WP installs are most likely running free WP themes & are technically challenged (lol). That makes a huge number of sites/blogs an easy target for base64 hacked themes which is probably only a fraction of the links Google is targeting.

I have a feeling Google might penalize the thousands/millions of sites that are unknowingly supplying the SAPE links considering the Google links above on how to clean up a hacked site. It's not too difficult to find footprints (WP + viagra header/footer links (lol)).

I'm not trying to add to the Google scare, just saying check the site before the $hit hits the fan. If Google devalues a hacked site/page it might not be so easy to recover a ranked SERP position.

Yeah, you will probably have to clean up the site, file a reconsideration request, and then wait 4-6 weeks.

woah google does like making problems for itself if millions of people did that then......... but also evidence that google relies mainly on manual reviewers and all that a inefficient business model for google considering there are 1000000000000000000 webpages out there... I would sack the head of google spam.

If Google can automate finding a problem on a site (algo.), I'm sure they can automate verifying the problem was fixed on the same site.

Quick note. When my other site got hit by the base64 viagra / payday links, I didn't submit a reconsideration.

The process for me was -

Tried to remove it once and it failed (when I thought I succeeded lol).
Tried to remove it again and succeeded.

Then my rankings came back about 3 weeks later.
The interesting thing about this, that site wound up moving into the top 3 once I removed all those garbage link (its still there, allcountywaterproofing).

So if you use a free theme, or don't scan your plugins, you may want to check your cache just to be safe. Those links will really hurt your rankings.

In 2010 every man and his internet marketing dog owned a website, now there are none left. SERPS that could make $2000 a month are dead easy to the well versed blackhat.

Marketers that couldn't adapt have just thrown in the towel, the ones who did found new ways of making their time more cost effective.

Unfortunately this means more low quality for Google. If they spend all of their time punishing bad behaviour and not thinking of new ways to reward good behaviour then all they will get is crap.

Until Cutts and his team can guarantee white hat sites won't get gunned down in the chaos, then I'm blackhat all the way and the updates don't change a thing. It's just whack a mole for Matt Cutts.

You wrote it itself: "and his internet marketing dog owned a website"...

You are wrong in the way that the websites of the IMs and his dogs was better as the BH spamers ones. They was shit too.

And they was never white hat, they was stupid grey and black hat, brushed over in dirty white.

Look at this forum and the threads and you will see all over the place the people here claiming they are "white hat" and "good content".

And in the next thread they ask for buying links, how xrumer works and whats the best content spinner is. White hat for the arse, i say.

The ranking are fine now! Because the hard working (aka the real spamers) are now ranked instead of the crap IMs here knowing nothing about anything but expecting to make big money.

As more IMs leave the internet and going back where they come from (cleaning toilets, dumbing nuclear wastes, selling drugs...) as better.

So ever since the last update I switched to Second Tier Media Buys, but the last couple of months I was offered a very nice contract on a few High Traffic sites ranking in G so I bought in.

That would be a kick in the pants for me. :/
So go check the Google cache (text version) of the pages that are sending you traffic. If they have viagra, payday, etc.. junk links in the header/footer of the web page, send them a note, get it fixed.

    My thoughts are very positive:

    1) More rubbish spammers will be thrown off
    2) Gives smaller SEO re-sellers a better chance to find new business due to the shake up

Only negative is the extra work it takes to adjust peoples backlink profile. But with the right resources this is never a problem!

i really dont care about it, every time google make a move they destroying the little man`s cash follow which helped them to grow bigger (when he added adsense to his site).

so after the first panda update i started to leave google as the major traffic source, and now i dont care what they are going to do, they can not affect my sites anymore.

so come on and create your zoo updates as much as you want and call it panda, penguin or whatever.

      So, you "leave" google?
How you can leave something you can't enter?

And how they can effect your sites? Beside not to rank you what

You have to go to your code editor in wordpress, then use control + f and search for it manually. Or that was the way I did it.

I'd click on every page and would click "next" to see if I had it. However, I didn't find it in my theme but my plugins, so you need to check your plugins too.

I checked the header and footer files, and didn't see anything..

What exactly do you put in the search when you do control+f?

My plugins have a ton of files.. are there specific files I should be looking in for each plugin, or look at every file within each plugin?

      thanks!

Check the options folder of admin options. Also... FTP in and search "http://" in each theme file.

A faster and more reliable way would be to download all your files and database to your computer. Then use Notepad++ to mass search all of them for any malicious code.

I work for a Web Design company doing SEO for their clients. I've been hoping for a Panda refresh for two months! Why? Because my employer left a development website up and indexed by Google, then suddenly in January our clients rankings tanked all over the place.

The only thing that it could be is the exact same website being online under our subdomain. Now that was an uncomfortable client conversation....I can't wait to check rankings on Monday! lol

We did, but the penalty only seems to get lifted when another refresh is made. I'm just glad it was only 2 months and not 6...

You could have forced the refresh much sooner by building a couple of back links to the development page. Within days it would have refreshed.

I started seeing big changes on my .co.uk site on Friday, this has continued all weekend but has slowed to a trickle today. Rankings have stabilised for sure at this moment, not seeing much change up or down today.

I'm doing the happy dance as my traffic doubled yesterday and can only be from those new rankings.

We have been watching and checking about 60 sites since this morning UK time, so far nothing has happened. The same goes for our U.S sites which are running behind due to the time difference.

      Either no update has occurred or we have done nothing bad lol.. { or sheer good luck }

You are 100% correct regarding the lack of forum activity, if you ignore threads talking about the impending doom { such as this thread }, I would rate the damage news at a big fat zero "so far"....
