Expectations of an SEO Company

I made a topic a minute ago, but I think I may have deleted it by accident.
There is a company offering my friend all kinds things per month, but most UK companies seem to be very vague when it comes to what they're offering.

What could he expect from a UK based SEO on a weekly basis?

Rank monitoring, analysis, and link building. He could also expect on-page recommendations and other consulting.

This is the minimum you should expect but assuming the onpage SEO recommendations is good, you want to make sure the links you're getting are off "good quality". Everyone has their own metric to decide what is a good quality link but you need to know that not all links are created equal.

link building is NOT seo. Although many link peddlers here
think it is. An seo company might (BIG MIGHT!) do
some link building. But if link building is the major thing they
do, they are not an SEO company.

SEO companies are vague because they have to be.

        Two major reasons.

One, they can't spill their secrets that all of us have.

        Second, they cannot make guarantees.

Plus, for perhaps a third, is that for some strange reason,
you may drop. This would be due to a number of things
        beyond their control.

If you want a list of things to look for, ask them for one.
They should tell you things like site structure, keyword
analysis, etc. Link building (other than internal) should
actually be #10 on a list of 10. If they can't give you
a list of at least 10 things, find someone else.

I take that back. The last item on the list should be
        something like constant monitoring...

The list of things probably will not include specific items
they will do, but more general. Like keyword analysis.
They will not tell you how they will perform this, nor
        optimize for it.

Paul sorry but that s just nonsense. Link building is a major part of any SEO companies work. You do not know what in the world you are talking about.

Whether it white hat link building or grey hat it still is link building so how you wrote that is just wrong.

I agree. I read that and was thinking "wtf". Even our most expensive SEO company, their main activity is link building. They do keyword research, analysis, send us reports every month and recommendations for changing our content, but their most prominent activity is link building.

BTW this company was voted one of the Top 10 SEO companies of 2012 on Top SEOs.com. Some people may not care, but it was part of the reason I used them. They have incredible reviews, you can call their former clients, and all of them had great things to say about them.

As far as what I expect on a "weekly basis" I don't expect anything.
On a monthly basis however they send us very detailed reports, we have a phone conference to go over everything for an hour or 2 (so I understand their recommendations better) and thats all we do once a month. When we initially signed up, they also told us not to expect significant changes for 3-6 months. But fortunately since our site was older, and I had already been building links, they got many of our keywords in the top 3 in the first 2 months. Its all manual link building that they do. No software is used for any of their link building. And they work their asses off to find you great links. I know because I've tried to replicate many of them for my other site, and its a major PITA.

Bladiebla, linkbuilding is not SEO, as soon as the kw's get just a little bit competitive you won't get there only based on site design, page load speed and other onpage stuff.

Besides that, for small sites link building is even much more important.

I do agree that the basics need to be in place first.

Well, it depends on company, whether the company is from UK, or USA.. you need to use their work at smaller level, if you find it is good then you can go for more.

The one thing which is very much necessary for a SEO company to take care is that they should keep in mind about all current as well as upcoming algorithm updates. This is the time, when a SEO company should focus on quality seo work.
You can expect to making better user experience, conversion rate optimization,ON page optimization and planning for quality inbound marketing.

Well a good start would be a viewkey where he could see live keyword positions. This way you can track all their progress.

Apart from that monthly/weekly reports are expected if the client is paying a substantial fee.

Of course the actual strategy should be fully explained before the start of any campaign.

    Thanks,

    Rob

  • You should expect this

    - He will check your website for on page seo recommendations based on targeted keywords.
    - He will analyze your competition for said keywords
    - He will tell you his plan on action for getting you ranked
    - He will tell you how long he thinks it will take to rank your website (usually a couple months)

    - You will pay him and wait for your rankings to move
    - After the first month you noticed nothing has improved on your rankings
    - Your rankings are getting worse and you keep asking him why but he assures you this is normal
    - 3 Months later your rankings are no where to be found on google

This is what your expectations should be

      loooooool I have another one

What to expect from a Budget SEO

-He will dazzle you with his knowledge of keyword density and link velocity. You will be pleasantly suprised by his prices and his promises are intoxicating (you want the moon? done, I deliver by Tuesday.)

-As soon as he gets the first money in his hands he assigns your case to a barely literate, non-English speaking assistant that is only online 2 hours a day (between 3am and 5am your time)

      - You will wake up one day to see your site has been "overhauled" and the "improvements" include ruthless usage of full size H1s all over the page and the garbled use of your keywords on every square inch of every page, spilling off the screen. Your SEO assures you that your "new" site is built to rank and sell.

-You have a new "Affiliates page" tucked into a cozy corner of your site.

-You Google yourself and discover you have author credits on several hundred strange articles and press releases that you don't remember writing. "Why you do like find dog hair removal in Philadelphia" and "Founder of this company eats 3 porkchops sandwhich style"

-You begin to receive hate emails and e-threats from blog owners around the world.... "stop spamming my site a-hole!!"

-All the while your site is slipping further and further into the depths... Your SEO explains that this is "top secret basketball method" of SEO. You must first hit bottom then you bounce to top spot. He is serious.

-The bounce never comes. Your site disappears from the SERPs and your SEO is gone with your money and your rankings.

      THE END

There can only be done so much within a budget.

That's why I say, focus on what you're good at, in my case that's link building ONLY.

Sure KW research and Onpage SEO are important but it doesn't fit in the budget of what most people are prepared to pay.

I ain't gonna lie about it, if people want me to do kw research or onpage optimization then I charge $100/hour.
