            You do know he is not the CEO right? He was a computer science major, one of 10's of thousands in silicon valley. $300k is a lot of money for any kind of developer.

              ronaldec I'm not sure if you're half for paul or against him, but he's largely being called out because he has 6000+ posts of "his thinking". That condescending tone of his is felt a lot, yet a lot of the time he is just talking down to someone and not actually saying anything of substance. Use search to understand what we're getting at.     Yes and im sure he being a millionaire and given the chance to be pure greedy person and stop anyone else making money is motivation enough for him. People like that go to hell. Greed is one thing but actually preventing poorer people from succeeding is a whole new level....... A example of the evil people who run the world nowadays.

      He isn't preventing poorer people from succeeding. His job has nothing to do with greed. It's not like he created his department or it was his idea to combat people trying to game Google's algorithm.

    Yes it is because according to him everything is gaming the system even created a backlink yourself is gaming the system so how can small buisness even start? because im sure google takes the view as any backlink made by the website owner is gaming the system.
    In anyway you look at it its just one big monopoly........ the internet has destroyed retail in shops and has now the internet is made up of a few select websites. The only unnatural way i can think of to get real backlinks from zero meaning no unnatural backlinks whatsoever would be to get on tv.... or other expensive ways for a business maybe then you will get traffic and people linking to your website naturally.
    But small business cannot afford this....

    And its not dumb its fact.

    If google had its way seo would exist so small business would never have a chance on the internet.

      First of all, it is Google, not Matt. You act like he is running the show there. He is just doing a job he was assigned to do. He doesn't make the policies.

      Second, there are tons of small businesses doing just fine on the internet. You act like Google wiped all small businesses out of the search engine. That is not true at all.

      Why do people act like it is some god-given right to be able to succeed with little to no money invested by starting a business online? Starting an online business or moving an offline business into the online arena is no different than any other business. It takes time and it takes money.

      If a small business owner cannot afford it, they shouldn't have a business.

      The ones who actually "make it" with little to no startup capital are few and far between.

    you do realize that the best thing to have in your life is peace of mind. If you are doing something you like plus you are getting paid for that in six figures (i assume it is $30K per month or so) then you are generating a nice income. Plus remember he is on a war with blackhatters - he's looking out for a company just like we look out for our sites. So peace with him.

        Still trying to figure out where I was wrong the first time. The figure was just something I quoted from a presentation I watched about talent drain in the non profit sector. Personally I think its higher than 120000. And $120000 salary is much more common than a stanford mba graduate., do you have a source for that? Where did you get that figure?

        Maybe its just the difference between a fresh mba grad and the maximum wage an mba grad gets in their lifetime

          People debating his wealth from Google based on how much an average grad from Stanford makes? If you don't understand the logical fallacy there is no reason to debate the issue.

          Why he doesn't build his own websites, selling some unknown product, having to do SEO himself? I don't know - why doesn't everyone have the same job in the world? Like the same people? Eat the same food? Why is anyone a teacher?

          He / Google is greedy and preventing poorer people from succeeding. WTF? Looking for desperate excuses and someone to blame is not productive thinking and not going to make you money.

      He doesn't need to. It wouldn't make sense for him to jeopardize his juicy gig at Google. He's fricken famous. He's got every SEO in the country hanging on his every tweet, he has built-in traffic. (And a bulletproof non-compete with Google I'm sure.) He could put up a blog about macrame purses and people would read it. If he left he'd be even more famous but couldn't talk about insider Google stuff publicly because he'd be sued very, very quickly. So pretty soon people would stop caring about Matt Cutts.

      Disclaimer: I don't agree with all of Googe's decision but then again who the hell am I?

    When someone is working for search engines, you can be pretty sure they are tightly bound by non-disclosure agreements. That's why Matt can't just sell it. At the same time, he wouldn't have time nor interest in promoting his own websites.

        Exactly! He is part of the web-spam team, not the "let's screw quality sites out of their rankings" team. Getting rid of the quality sites sadly just happens to be a side effect of getting rid of spam which is massively prevalent in results (and that's still an understatement really).

        That's why good sites are forced to ride of the search algo waves of change while the storm is actually intended for the bad pirates on the sea looking to plunder all they can.

      Do you really think Google hires people and lets them in on the inside without making them sign tons of legal documents preventing them from running a business online?
