Is it really worthwhile to have and maintain a blog? Running a blog seems to be the "in thing" these days, but are they REALLY all that helpful in getting traffic to your sales site?

Does anyone have any statistics relevant to a retail e-commerce site (ie a site selling physical products such as ours, not affiliate squeeze pages or e-book sales pages ... those markets are quite different) comparing traffic generated from SEO vs. traffic generated from a blog vs. traffic generated from PPC vs. traffic generated from an opt-in mailing list vs. traffic generated from articles & forum posts vs. traffic generated from other methods?

Depends on core business model and what your objectives are.

Blogs are great for branding and having a centralized location where your customers can keep updated about your products and services can help you retain and acquire new customers.

Blogging may be worthwhile as an addition to other marketing you are doing. But blogs and blogging are only one piece of the internet puzzle. In order to get maximum traffic, you'll want to employ each of the strategies you mention above.

Making a decision to incorporate blogs on your site based on stats from others may not be a good idea because the stats will be unique to that business. What you want to do is just start one and see for yourself if its worthwhile over the course of time.

Of course, a blog can introduce your business to your audience. A blog conversion is high since the generated traffic must come with 'open-to-buy' mind

If you compare the traffic, It's all depend on the blog content quality and how you promote the blogs too, more quality blog of course will drive more traffic.

By the way, a blog can be used to boost SEO traffic too. Blog will helps to rank higher on search engines most of the time

By far, if you have reached a point where you have a large opt-in mailing list, that is almost always going to be the most productive traffic. Unfortunately, the way we track our success is not generalized enough. For example, advertising on one specific site can really bring traffic, but that traffic may have an initial spike followed by a slow decline over time. Or PPC may do well for a while until competitors start using the same keywords. I think marketing is a full time task that is very dynamic, and even with large companies, the strategies change over time.
