I think there is a lot of members here that optimize websites from different countries, and so do I.

The problem is that the range of links is very small compared to the English market, so I wonder how you solved it? Is it possible to get top rankings with "English" backlinks?

That is an interesting question. I optimize in English and in Spanish but I can see where this could be an issue for sites in languages that aren't as prominent on the web. If it's local then I say citations should get you there. Even if it's not local but it's in any language in the top ten internet languages (other than English) then I don't think you should have a huge problem finding links:

German, Russian, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, French, Italian, Portuguese, Polish and Arabic (in that order, thanks Wikipedia lol)

I think it's important that the SEO be completely fluent if not a native speaker of the language to be able to do that kind of work. Even if you aren't writing content you have to be able to search effectively for link building opportunities and judge the quality of the linking site.

If you are optimizing for a site that doesn't qualify as local and it's not in one of the languages above then your best bet may be to offer an English version and get links that way. It's not hard to set up.

Another interesting option is if you can't find it: build it. You can be sure that if you have a need for a certain kind of directory or another kind of site in a certain language then there are other people out there looking for the same thing. Why not build it yourself and heck maybe make some extra cash? ***Thanking my lucky stars that I have a FABULOUS mentor that makes me think about stuff like this. You're the man!***

Best of luck, looking forward to advice from the other warriors about this!

I would not even worry about backlinks. They would be pretty worthless
if you SEO is not for that specific country. Here's the main thing to
think about and GET RIGHT before you even start imagining backlinks.

Is your site translated right? That is, was it writtne by someone who
actually knows how to write in that language other than just
      "translating."?

Keywords. You have got to get this right. They are not the same
      in every country and language.

Last but not least, if you are targeting a specific country, be
sure and check out which search engine is used by the general
population. It might not be google.

If you have those 3, get ready for the next 3.

IP address in chosen country, TLD of chosen country, and
content (see #1 above) is targeted for that country and
language. Everything, from meta description to title should
be in that language if possible.

And finally, backlinks. You must get backlinks from similar
      IPs and TLDs.
