Can someone explain to me what they are or give an example? I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the term.

For example: Keyword "Utah Homes For Sale" would a long tailed keyword be "4 bedroom ramblers for sale in Utah"?

  • Yes, that's correct. Low search terms with low competition keywords.

  • A longtail keyword by definition is just a keyword phrase that is longer than most that have high search volumes. So let's say most keyword phrases that have high search volumes have 4 words or less in them a long tail keyword is a phrase with 5 words or more. They do not have to be low search volume. They are almost always low competition. That, there, is the trick....find a long tail keyword phrase that does have a good search volume!

  • Great thanks!
  • I think that definition of Long tail keyword varies depending on who you ask. It's more relative in my opinion. What I think is a long tail keyword may not be to someone else; and vice versa.

    • Exactly. Some would think of 4 keywords or more as long tail keyword phrases, while others would view long tail keywords as those with 6 words or more. I view keyword phrases consisting of 5 words or more as long tail, but that's just me. What's important is you do your research on your chosen keyword phrase. Choose ones that make sense as a phrase, with low to medium competition, and more than 10,000 searches.

  • lol not likely to find any with 10,000 searches here. All minor searches for real estate here in Utah.
  • Long tail keywords are the longer, more specific keywords that are less common, individually, but add up to account for the majority of search-driven traffic.

Long tail keywords are the opposite of "head" terms, which are more popular or more frequently searched on. For example, "fish tanks" is a head term, but "compare prices whisper aquarium filters" is a long-tail keyword. Read More about long tail keywords

  • I think that can be too long and this wont get you much traffic. Better make it like "4 bedroom home for sale in uttah" or "uttah 4 bedroom for sale"

  • I prefer to use long tail keywords for fresh websites......

  • Long Tail is a term that gets very misused in IM.

It has nothing to do with the number of words. It is quite possible to have short long tail keywords.

It's all to do with statistical distributions. I won't bore you with the details, but hopefully the following SEOMoz graph should help

  • A long tail keyword is the longer and more specific keyword, usually composed of 3 or more words – they are more of a phrase than a broad description (compare to short tail). It is less common and draws fewer visitors but often pull more quality visitors leading to more conversions than ordinary keyword. Choosing which type of keywords to use usually depends on your market and the keyword competition.
  • Really great info from everyone! Thank you again!
