sitemap indexing and index status

Hi. Can anyone explain why Google would index 30 pages from my sitemap but when I check index status in webmaster tools, it shows only one page being indexed? I uploaded a new wordpress site in Dec which is when my index status plummeted to one but it's yet to recover. I use XML Sitemap Generator plugin to create sitemaps.

Once I submit a sitemap to google, it reads it from my root folder? So if XML Sitemap Generator rebuilds the sitemap, Google will read that new file when it does indexing?

    Google WMT can take a while to update. How long ago did you submit your sitemap? Many times pages will be indexed however they will not appear in WMT.

  • Link to an html sitemap on your website, add some deep links to your content, make sure your navigation is the same across all pages, make sure the content is unique on all those pages and just wait a bit more.
