Hello warriors!

I'm a bit disappointed at the moment. I created a website on "lose weight", optimized it and got 4 high PR backlinks for it. The competition is not fierce in the SA market so I thought I was at least going to be on page 2... But I'm on page 6.

Can anyone please tell me what I did wrong? Lose Weight website

You can see the SA search results here

My keyword desnities were below 2%, H1 and H2 contained keyword, footer and title contained keyword.

Thanks!

First of all, you don't have enough content. Google only has two pages indexed for your site. If you want to be on page 1, you need a lot more content. You've bought into the "link chasing" SEO crowd, and you're seeing the results. Now follow the "more relevant content" SEO crowd and you'll do better.

You have no internal links with keyword plugged anchor text from your other pages (well, there's only two more that I saw, but two's better than nothing) to your home page. Internal linking strategy is just as important, if not more, than external linking.

You made your header the H1 tag. The problem with this is that it's not closely juxtaposed with your main content. I'd change the header into a P tag, and make your first header in the body (currently an H2) into an H1.

In my opinion, you don't plug your keyword enough in the body of your content. Plus, you totally use your strong tag unwisely. Try throwing your keyword phrase around, putting it in different tags, such as b, strong, i, em, and also include it in a list (ordered or unordered, doesn't matter).

The main thing you're missing is content. You should never assume you can get a page ranked highly with only a few pages of content.... no matter how many external links you've attained. Chasing links is for amateurs, building good, relevant content is the pro method.

Jeez ok guys thanks for the information! The reason why I did not include the keyword much in the main body was because I were afraid of keyword spamming. My keyword density was already more than 2%

There's a difference between keyword spamming and keyword "plugging". You want to plug your keyword phrase many times. You can actually go up to a keyword density of between 3-5% and not be considered spam if you sprinkle it throughout your content. If you just put a paragraph like this

weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss

then THAT is spamming. If you effectively plug "weight loss" throughout the body of your content so that it's fairly naturally occurring, then that's perfectly fine. My recommendation is to use other HTML tags to highlight it, such as strong, b, em, i, and then include it tactfully in an ordered, or unordered list.

Google isn't going to knock you for naturally occurring keyword phrases, so this is where your good web copy skills come into play... make it look and read natural.

No he didn't. 4 backlinks is a joke. He should follow both crowds since they're both necessary. Slowly acquire more backlinks (I'd outsource it since it's boring) while he can personally worry about the content and in-site linking structure (although with 2 pages there isn't much to do).

That makes sense, thanks for the tip!

just to clarify something I said earlier... when I said you need more content, I was talking about pages of content. Add more pages to your site, make the content relevant (but with different keyword phrase focus), and then point links to your home page that look like this...

    Code:
    <a href="http://www.lose-weight.co.za/" title="lose weight" >Lose Weight</a>
But do this tactfully within the content of your page.

I have never seen the "title" script before, what does it do?

Will do thanks for the info!

It's an ATTRIBUTE. HTML tags, such as the Anchor tag, have attributes. The Title attribute is one of many.

I BELIEVE that the title attribute is mainly useful for making accessible websites (handicap friendly - i.e. blind people who use screen readers, etc.)

I like it because when you hover over the link, it pops up what you put in the title attribute.

As far as SEO... I don't know 100% for sure if it's one of the 200-some factors that Google uses to rate your page. It could play a minor role, so I do it. I see it like the img tag alt attribute... it's a small factor, but a factor nonetheless.

My theory on SEO is to exhaust ALL the on-page optimization techniques you possibly can, and then go for off-site. I've had great success just using on-site optimization. Then, add a couple of quality links pointing to hyper-optimized pages and I can get just about anything to rank where I want it.

You have to be very detail oriented to follow this path, however. It's not for everyone. Your pages have to validate, follow all coding standards, use effective content hierarchy, and develop good internal linking.... and have good, quality, relevant content.

Awesome, I like your style. I'm actually new to the SEO game, only been 3 months but I have learned a lot, and read a lot of books. The only problem that I run into is every book that I read has different tactics and opinions so it's difficult to find the right formula for SEO. I'm actually a mathematics and numbers guy if you know what I mean, I'm still waiting for a guide with experiments done on different tactics etc but I haven't been able to find one. More like a scientific guide regarding SEO.

It sounds like you know what you are doing maybe you could refer me to some articles or books where you found the most relevant information?

I just wish I had the time to do hundreds of experiments on my own by I don't have the time so I'm hoping to learn from the experts like you on this forum.

          Thanks for your help

You might like SEO Theory then. Updates are temporarily frozen on that site, but there's years worth of great info in there... especially if you like numbers. Michael Martinez is a stats guy.

            Good luck!

Your site is going to need a lot more content and your keywords then to be included more throughout the content on the site then you will achieve the higher rankings that you want.
