Niche Vs Authority Model - Is There a Different Way of Targeting KWs?

Say that you're in the home improvement niche. You are planning on writing reviews on a broad range of products, including power tools, thermostats, heaters, kitchen & bath fixtures, lighting & ceiling fans, and so on. Which keyword would YOU want to rank for on the homepage?

Say that "power tool reviews" gets the highest number of exact searches a month, and the competition on page 1 is relatively easy to beat, is this the KW you would opt to rank for?

If it is then surely it doesn't reflect the whole feel of the site?

Come to think of it, I take it that the best way of doing things is:

1 page targeting power tool reviews, 1 page targeting thermostat reviews, 1 page targeting kitchen and bath fixtures reviews etc.

Which KW would you use for the homepage?

Clearly, none of this would be an issue, if you're targeting just power tools or thermostats, but the less domains the better.

As you can see, I'm a bit confused.

Amazon is an authoritative website. They have TONS of products. They have no problem ranking for products. What keyword do they target on their home page?

Better divide it over multiple websites, you ain't gonna rank for power tool reviews with only 1 page dedicated to it, you would need a whole category for it so that you build authority for the topic.

Also, if you want to go that broad then you need a ton of juice if you want to rank for meaningful keywords, otherwise you will only rank for short tails, but well a massive amount of short tale also adds up of course but be prepared to invest a ton in content.

It's just easier to focus on smaller sites like 20-30 pages if you want fast results.

I left out a key point: the "Power Tool Reviews" page will have a list of 20-30 products, all of which will lead to my 500-1,000 word review of the product in question.

      Still a bad idea?

Nope, that would work, but you are the one that said 1 page

Haha, fair point. I need to start phrasing/explaining things better.

Anyway, authority site is still a bad idea, you wouldn't get enough juice to rank meaningful keywords with decent amount of searches when you cover so many topics.

By the time the site gets momentum the products that you review are outdated and then you can start writing again. Unless you love to write!

I know I don't, I rather throw up a 20 page site that only focuses on some sort of power tool, bank $100/month for a couple of months and then flip it for $1k+

My advice is also work with different sites. It is really easy to rank one website, but Market Samurai is a MUST have tool!
