PLEASE answer my question only if you know the answer. Please avoid emotions and vague statements.

Recently I've been researching some stuff online and realized that STILL there are MANY 1-2 page wonders that are peacefully sitting on the first page. Especially when the search for a specific product. I mean the WHOLE content of the website is no more than 1000 words!

How the hell do they do it???

Please enlighten me >>>>

Thanks,
Vlad

Yes, it still works. I have a number of Blogger blogs ranking on page 1 of Google with just one page of content. If you go for low competition keywords you don't even need that many backlinks. A few of mine have no backlinks at all and still got ranked well. If you don't want to use Blogger, I've seen Weebly, Webs, Blinkweb and others ranking with just one page of content too.

Low competition keywords usually have low searches, but that's okay because when you only need one page of content you can have a site up and running in an hour or less. If you have a simple one page website that makes just 2 sales a month and the commission is $50 that's still $1200 a year for doing almost nothing.

It might not be a good long term plan, but it's a great way to test niches, make some seed money for your own websites etc.

I also have some keyword-rich domains that still are on the first page of Google with very little content on them. These have low competition as well with no back links. Keywords in your URL link can play an important role.

They do it using backlinks and most of the times using power links. This simply means that they have network of powerful pages with high page ranks already built with solid backlink profile and when they add their one page site link over there with anchor text it is easy to push these minisites on the top for moderate phrases...

Seriously? You posted a vague OP (no example site/URL) but your not OK with vague answers?

    The answer is external links.

Huge amount of links, simple. You bet you could rank a blank page for a fairly good keyword if you give it "enough" links.

Ranking those kinds of sites for some not so competitive keywords would be easy if you can make lots of strong backlinks or to power it with a big network.

these are the kinds of sites Panda will eventually (and hopefully) weed out.

People always say it's much more beneficial (for IM purposes) to have a 1 page, 1,500 word site instead of a 5 page site w/ 300 words on each page.

I've done this several times. There's a video in my sig showing a couple.

I'm glad you raised this subject, because so many people seem to think that SEO is dead -- which is of course ridiculous.

The answer is, high pr links from relevant sites.

Not only backlinks, but if your 1000 word content is highly targeted to the product it could be the most relevant website about this topic. Google will rank it and try to deliver value to their searching users.
