Asking in another way about backlinks

Creating backlinks:

Why can't it be as simple as using your competitor's backlinks to websites and directories to create your own?

Right now, I could get at least 2000 backlinks doing this, and the best of my competitors has only about 100 links.

Since I am new at this, I may be missing something?

Thank you, anyone...

    Jupiter,
You can definitely use this method but I suggest you use it in moderation. You do not want to build too many links too fast, especially if there are a lot of directories and low PR websites on their backlink list. You have to remember that the algorithms have been changing drastically and old link building techniques are starting to get penalized. So I say with caution integrate getting competitors backlinks along with generating highly unique content with contextual links. Once you start getting natural backlinks that way you will have people linking to your site. It is a long tedious process, but if you are using social bookmarking, blogging, guest blogging, digg, stumbleupon etc, google will find those links much more helpful and powerful than going through your competitors backlinks and getting paid listings which are now being penalized.

      Great info, Dreeves - thanks

      Wonder if you can clarify:

"google will find those links much more helpful and powerful than going through your competitors backlinks and getting paid listings which are now being penalized."

How will I be getting paid listings? I don't plan to use link to any websites that want a fee....

Basically what I am saying is, if you can get links in blog posts related to your site or niche that will be way more beneficial than getting your link in some directories and on blog roll lists. Getting links without paying or giving a reciprocal link is going to be very very difficult especially if your main goal is to rank on google. Sites that get free links are going to be the power house websites ie. WebMD, COPD Foundation, companies that have a reputation far beyond the web.... As you build your links and your site continues to rank that is when the free links will come and people will be asking you how they can link to you... You have to expect to spend some money to get what you want when it comes to SEOing your site. The backlinks your competitors have, you can send me one of their URL's and I can give their backlinks a look and give you my opinion on how good they are, but if they are linking to free and paid directories besides DMOZ im sure they are on quite a few link farms (all of this stuff i found through checking out my competitors) and that is not going to be beneficial to you...

          Wow. Thanks.

I had a website before this one, created in 1996. Only Yahoo and Excite existed as search directories/engines pretty much. I started to build links one by one - reciprocal, so incredibly time consuming - took me months at the computer.

I will send you a private message now about my competitors websites now.

Not a problem, I actually just got penalized by google for my old link building ways and I have literally stopped link building on that site just to research what I need to do to get it out of the sandbox... Just send me over 1-3 urls and I will just do a quick overview of their backlinks... Im not an expert, but I like to think I know what I am doing
