Is Matt Cutts An Authority To Follow?

Is he Google's poster child...

Or is all he says the deep-seated truth of SEO?

Honestly, I would like to know. I commonly reference him in my monthly copywriting newsletter, sent to 400+ of my subscribers. Sadly, it's just because I know they like to hear him...but it's always just a reference and not "A Rule To Abide By".

Your thoughts??

He's worth listening to as a general guide. He's not about to giveaway any of Google's secrets though.

I actually find the things that he doesn't/won't say a lot more valuable than anything he does say. Like trying to interpret new legislation as laid out by a politician.

Please list at least 5 lies he's told, or we'll have to assume you just made that up.

I watch his videos for SEO hints - I haven't noticed any direct lies, but I'm sure he omits things.

Just from the top of my head.
        1. If you build it they will come.
        2. Duplicated content on your own domain is against Google and will be penalized.
        3. Scraped content is against Google policy and will be penalized.
        4. Link Juice will not flow true "no follow" links.
        5. He lied about the penguin update, he stated it was not or not only a backlink update.

        Why would Matt Cutts lie?

Matt Cutts gets his paycheck from Google.
        Matt Cutts owns Google stock.

Never noticed how many real honest webmasters are getting screwed over by the Google updates, even if they did everything by the letter?

You go ahead and belief what Matt and Google feeds you, i'll do my own testing if you don't mind.

Still looking for the lies. Why do people misquote google and cutts?
You are missing a whole lot of the rest of the quotes.

          Common practice.

That's like me saying "I climbed the highest mountain in the world."
And people falling all over that.
But not adding, "last night in my dreams."

          Huge difference.

Any SEO person who says to ignore everything from Cutts, has
their own agenda and I would steer clear of them.

            I agree with this.

People in SEO are so quick to call him the "Minister of Disinformation" and automatically discount everything he has to say.

Sure, he has an agenda...but I do think he tells at least part of the truth in his Webmaster Help videos.

Contrary to popular belief, Google is NOT out to get you.

They just want to show their users quality results so they can make money.

And considering Cutts is one of the few people with real, insider knowledge, I pay attention.

Maybe you should read is again cus the lies are there... but he, you go ahead and believe everything Matt tells you, i have no agenda, i really don't care either way what you do.

OP ask the question and i gave my opinion on it, I take everything he says with a truck of sold, cus most of the stuff he has been feeding is isn't true or partly true... don't belief me, fine do your own testing instead of following propaganda boy.

Get a .info domain, create a article and change about 4% of the content (tip use city names) and blast the new domain with poor links and see if it ranks and if it stays there.

I have multiple .info domains with 92% dup Dutch content (on the same domain mind you) and blasted with only crappy scrapebox/SB Bomber/Sick Submitter links... now funny thing is: they have stand the whole zoo of updates and ranking well for great local keywords.

According to your trusted friend Matt; This isn't possible..... But it is... How strange...

Don't belief me Paul? PM me and i will show you one of my domains to proof taht Matt is full of it. Seriously no agenda here...

Hes the enemy even if you are white hat everything to google that is done by the webmaster for seo is gaming the system...... if you read the google seo beginners guide on google you will find all of it is pure rubbish basic on pages stuff with a paragraph on off site seo which basically tells you not to do it. He doesn't mention a thing about off page seo...(i think anyway not seen and off page stuff) basically its like taking advise from you worse enemy who's best interest is for you not to do off page seo.

Well keep your friends close and your enemy's closer is something i do...

I guess it okay if your a beginner and you want to know about on page seo... but after the basics then...... even the update hints are useless as a good seo strategy will mean you shouldn't have to worry.. well i guess it is okay if you know when all you competition will fall but apart from that reading the articles on that blog is a waste of time.

I follow Cutts on Twitter. Most of the time it's just drivel (it might be important but I stop reading after the first line) but occasionally he does drop some truth bombs.

I second the "build it and they will come" nonsense. All the big players buy links - it's that simple despite it clearly being a violation of Google's ToS.

Google and Matt Cutts are just trying to deliver what the searchers are looking for, without it Google would fall apart. The searchers would, followed by the advertisers and they wouldn't remain as the top searchengine for very long. He tells how to optimize your website for the SEARCHERS, not the searchengines.

If he was to tell "SEO experts" how to "game" the searchengines Google would die. Anybody remember how the Big 8 (infoseek, altavista, hotbot, etc.) used to rule the searchengines back in the late 90's? This upstart called Google came along providing more relevant search results with better technology and thus destroying the Big 8.

If Matt Cutts gave tips to game the searchengines it would destroy Google. His tips optimizes for the people doing the searches and is really good advice at times, but you also need to read between the lines. If you try to "trick" your way to the top yeah he's the enemy, but as far as listening to him I do, but I don't take everything he says as gospel.

On another note my Matt Cutts voodoo doll is getting a little worn out (I lost count) anyone knows where I can get one that yelps and screams when I stick the pins in? Oh yeah and doesn't break when you throw it against the wall?

Matt says, “write good content” or “write for the users experience.” Garbage! Fact is, writing good content or writing for the users experience is never enough! You must manipulate content to get big traffic. He doesn’t tell you that, and thats why Google’s algorithm is a secret. People would be raving mad if they knew the truth.
Tell me this, how can you write good content for readers if the one evaluating it is a robot that reads on a six grade level...at best? He lies, maybe not always, but even one lie... makes him a lier.

Where's the other post about the voodoo doll? But I see love and hate here. LOL, he is all wired up on many occasions, I agree on the Red Bull observation.

Did you see his latest post? It's what he learned spending time away from the web and email. His 30 day no internet period. Interesting. I wonder if he lost a substantial Google paycheck, or if they propagated that one in another manipulative move?
