How to tell if your website is www. or not

As the topic states

www.mysite.com
mysite.com

The above are two unique websites in googles eyes. Therefore I want to be certain if my website is www. or not before I begin building backlinks. How do I confirm if it is www or not?

Thanks
#website #www

Do domain redirection in hosting admin panel,www.domain.you to domain.you.
In Google WebMasterTool register both domains and add redirection www.domain.you to domain.you.

  • Bluehabit,

It is common to redirect naked or non-www URL’s to www domains or vis versa. You can build backinks to either one but I would use the www version wherever possible. You should also implement the redirect as a best practice.

Here is a tutorial on how to do that,

Redirecting non-www to www with .htaccess | dense13.com

Simply type your domain URL into the address bar on your browser. Once the website has finished loading, what you see is what you have, i.e., if no www is shown in the address then it is has no "www".

Thanks everyone. Another question on a related note.

At the moment I have indexing discouraged while I am developing my site. However I do have a few high quality back links pointed at my site. But I noticed when I check the backlinks on my site google is reporting zero.

Once I allow indexing again will the backlinks hopefully show back up?

Google doesn't show 100% of your backlinks.

Also, GWT (Google Webmaster Tools) is usually slow about updating data (days/weeks), If your looking at GWT.

@Yukon, would backlinks even appear if you de-indexed your site though? Also not using WMT at the moment but this http://smallseotools.com/backlink-checker/

Don't use that tool, it's hard telling where they're getting their data. Use something like seospyglass (free version). Spyglass has a decent rep. considering it's free.

Keep in mind no SEO tool will show all your links & some SEO tools data can be outdated (links might not exist today).

Also, the data on all 3rd party backlink tools has nothing to do with Google, Google isn't supplying that data so it doesn't necessarily mean Google knows about any/all the links being shown in the 3rd party link tools.

But if you de-index your site would that remove all backlinks until you enabled indexing again?

No, the links on external sites pointing to your site would still exist even If the pages on your site don't exist.

That's the answer to the OP question.

Simply search in your browser & see where the page gets redirected.

Check which version of your site's home page is displayed in Google. If www version is available in index then you can redirect now www version to www version of your site.
